Porter added to 2014 recruiting class

BELLEVUE, Neb. -- The Bellevue University volleyball program has announced today the signing of 6-1 middle blocker/outside hitter Abbi Porter (Sidney, Neb./Sidney HS) to a letter of intent to continue her academic and athletic careers at Bellevue beginning in the fall of 2014.

The daughter of David and Carol, Porter was coached by Sarah Wilson at Sidney High School where she was a four-year letterwinner in volleyball and basketball.

She was named the all-Region Volleyball Player of the Year in 2013 while being named to the all-volleyball team by the Star-Herald as a junior and senior. Porter was also a four-time all-Western Conference selection.

"We saw Abbi back in July and had her on our radar," said head coach Trish Siedlik. "We knew that she was athletic and still had room to grow into a player that we could see making a huge impact on our program. Once we had her on campus, we knew she was a great fit.  She is a very smart young lady and we are so happy that she chose Bellevue to be her next chapter in her career.  We are looking forward to seeing her excel with our strong core of returners along with a talented incoming freshman class."

Porter, who also lettered in track and field as a freshman and sophomore, holds four school records, including most kills in a match (20) and most blocks in a match (10.5). In basketball, she ranks first in school history with nine blocked shots in a game and also set the Red Raiders' season mark with 101 blocked shots as a senior.

She was an honor roll student and a member of the National Honor Society at SHS. Porter also participated in Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Porter joins earlier signees Maddison Nygren (Mead, Neb./Mead HS), Kamille Smith (Spencer, Okla./Midwest City HS), Rachel Wald (Omaha, Neb./Douglas County West HS), Pimi Dike (Bellevue, Neb./Bellevue  West HS), Taylor Holz (Omaha, Neb./Skutt Catholic  HS), Gracie Myers (Treynor, Iowa/Treynor HS), Hope Lambrecht (Wood River, Neb./Wood River HS) and Hannah Taylor (Hallam, Neb./Lincoln Christian HS) in the 2014 recruiting class.

The 2013 Bruins finished the season with a 34-9 overall record and advanced to the NAIA National Tournament for the seventh-straight season.
