Bruins split in final day of Bruin/Premier Classic

BELLEVUE, Neb. -- The Bellevue University volleyball team split its two matches in the final day of the Bruin/Premier Classic Saturday at the Gordon Lozier Center.

Bellevue (22-5) opened the day with a 25-20, 27-25, 25-19 sweep against Morningside College before falling 25-23, 25-20, 21-25, 16-25, 15-11 to No. 23 Grand View University.

The Bruins will travel to Point Lookout, Mo. next Friday, Oct. 11, for a key MCAC matchup at College of the Ozarks (16-12). First serve is set for 7 p.m. at Keeter Gymnasium.

Bellevue 3, Morningside 0

Outside hitters Annie Benson and Caitlyn Rueth combined for 22 kills to lead the Bruins in the 3-0 (25-20, 27-25, 25-19) sweep over Morningside. It marked Bellevue's 15th sweep of the season. 

Benson recorded her eighth double-double of the season with a match-high 12 kills and 15 digs. Rueth collected 10 kills and three digs for the BU offense. 

Beth Walker collected her team-best 10th double-double on the year with 31 assists and 14 digs. Meghan Evans finished with 11 digs in the win. 

Symone Faulkner contributed with nine kills and a match-high three blocks. 

The Mustangs (9-10) were held to a .056 hitting. Michaela Kennedy and Amanda Woodman both notched six kills to pace MC.

Grand View 3, Bellevue 2

After dropping the first two sets, the Bruins won the next two to force a fifth set before the Vikings posted a 15-11 win to defeat BU, 3-2.

Evans notched a season-high 24 digs with three set assists and two service aces while Walker registered 48 assists, nine digs and five kills.

Benson recorded 16 kills and 17 digs and Rueth added 13 kills and a career-high 16 digs. Faulkner chipped in 12 kills and pair of block assists.

GVU outhit BU .150 to .129 with 10 total blocks and three service aces.

The Vikings improved to 16-9 with the win and were led by Kelly Koutnik and Erin Roggenburg who both recorded 12 kills.

BU fell to 3-2 in five-set matches this season.
