No. 12 Bison edge No. 13 Bellevue in five sets

BELLEVUE, Neb. -- No. 12 Oklahoma Baptist University snapped Bellevue University's 14-match winning streak after defeating the Bruins 3-2 (15-25, 25-17, 23-25, 25-23, 18-16) in the Bruin/Premier Classic on Friday night at the Gordon Lozier Athletic Center.

Oklahoma Baptist won its seventh-straight game and improved to 17-4 while Bellevue fell to 21-4.

The Bruins will conclude tournament action tomorrow (Oct. 5) with matches scheduled against Morningside College (9-9) at 1:00 p.m. and No. 23 Grand View University (15-8) at 5:00 p.m.

Annie Benson (20) and Sunny Bell (15) combined for 35 kills to lead the offensive attack. Benson also added 18 digs for her seventh double-double of the season.

Beth Walker also notched a double-double with 49 assists, 13 digs and six kills while Meghan Evans led the defense with a match-high 19 digs.

Trailing 9-6 in the first game, the Bruins scored the next nine points fueled by six kills by Benson to win, 25-15. Benson finished the stanza with nine kills on .692 hitting while Sydney DeBoer recorded five kills to lead BU.

OBU scored six of the first seven points and the Bruins never led in the second set as they fell, 25-17.

The Bison once again took an early lead, opening the third game on a 6-0 run. Trailing 11-5, the Bruins used a 3-0 spurt to trim their deficit down to three before OBU answered back with a 5-1 run to extend its lead to 16-9. After five-straight BU points forced a Bison timeout, OBU scored the next two, but the Bruins outscored OBU 11-5 to end the set and complete the comeback.

OBU outhit the Bruins .239 to .182 and trailed by one just three times as they took the fourth set, 25-23, and forced a fifth and deciding game. 

Trailing 14-9 in the final set, BU scored six-straight points to take a 15-14 lead, but the Bison answered back by scoring four of the last five points to win the match.

OBU was paced by Kristin Pressley's 23 kills and 13 digs.

BU is now 3-1 in five-set matches this season.
