No. 15 Bellevue defeats McPherson, Kansas Wesleyan

SALINA, Kan. -- The Bellevue University volleyball team posted a pair of wins Saturday evening at the Kansas Wesleyan Triangular in nonconference action at Mabee Arena.

The Bruins opened with a 25-13, 25-13, 25-15 win versus McPherson College before defeating Kansas Wesleyan University 25-21, 25-20, 25-18.

With the two wins, Bellevue improved to 18-3 overall this season.

The Bruins, who have won their last 11 matches, will travel to Denver, Colo. on Saturday, Sept. 28 with matches scheduled against York College and Johnson & Wales University.

Bellevue 3, McPherson 0

Caitlyn Rueth and Annie Benson combined for 21 kills to lead the Bruins to their fifth-straight win in straight sets.

Rueth pounded 11 kills on .409 hitting while Benson hit .643 with 10 kills and eight digs.

Beth Walker directed the Bruins to a hitting percentage of .429 with 32 assists, six digs and two blocks. This marks the third time this season BU has hit .400 or better.

With the opening set tied at 4-4, BU went on a 9-0 run to propel the Bruins to the 25-13 win. The Bruins, who ended the set on a 7-0 run, were led by Benson and Sydney DeBoer who combined for nine of the team's 13 kills. BU hit .565 and held the Bulldogs to just .080 hitting in the first game.

Facing an early 2-1 deficit, BU used a 4-0 spurt to the post a 25-13 second game win. Rueth paced the offensive attack with six kills.

Trailing 4-3, the Bruins went on a 6-1 run, and never trailed again, en route to the 25-15 third set win. BU hit .435 and limited MC to -.067 hitting with 10 errors.

The Bulldogs fell to 9-8 with the loss.

The Bruins concluded the day with a 4-0 record after sweeping Kansas Wesleyan 25-21, 25-20, 25-18.

Benson registered her fifth double-double of the season with 14 kills and 11 digs while Sunny Bell added 11 kills.

Walker recorded 38 assists, seven digs and three kills while Meghan Evans tallied 19 digs to lead the defense.

The first set featured nine ties and five lead changes and neither team led by more than four points. Leading by one, 20-19, the Bruins scored five of the last seven points to take the opening set, 25-21.

Trailing 10-9 in the second set, the Bruins outscored the Coyotes 16-10 to post the 25-20 win. Bell led the offense with five kills.

Leading 9-8 in the third game, BU scored 16 of the final 26 points to end the match and win, 25-18. The Bruins hit .353 and recorded two service aces.

The Bruins hit .270 with six total blocks and and five service aces.

The Coyotes (12-9) were led by Brittaney Miller's 13 digs and seven kills.
