No. 17 Bruins sweep Waldorf in conference opener

FOREST CITY, Iowa -- The 17th-ranked Bellevue University volleyball team opened Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference action with a sweep at Waldorf College, winning 25-20, 25-19, 25-16 Thursday night at Hanson Fieldhouse.

Bellevue improved to 9-3 and 1-0 in the MCAC while Waldorf fell to 6-12 overall and 0-1 in league action.

Sydney DeBoer led the Bruins with 15 kills and five block assists while Sunny Bell added 12 kills, three digs and two blocks.

Beth Walker tallied 33 assists, four service aces and a pair of blocks.

Nine different players recorded a dig and were led by Meghan Evans' team-high eight.

The Bruins scored 10 of the first 13 points in the opening set. WC responded with an 8-3 run to cut BU's lead down to two, 13-11, but the Warriors never got any closer as the Bruins took the game, 25-20. Bell and DeBoer combined for 13 of the team's 16 kills in the stanza.

After dropping the first point of the second set, BU scored the next six and led by as many as seven en route to the 25-19 win. The Warriors were plagued by nine hitting errors in the game.

BU trailed just once in the third set and used a 5-0 run to end the match capped off by a Walker service ace to post the 25-16 win. Seven different Bruins registered a kill in the final game.

BU hit .270 with seven service aces and nine total blocks.

The Warriors were led by Aby Emiru's eight kills and eight digs.

The Bruins will return to action on Friday-Saturday, Sept. 13-14 for the Ashford Saints Invitational in Clinton, Iowa.
