Bruins split a pair of matches in Labor Day Classic

BELLEVUE, Neb. -- The 12th-ranked Bellevue University volleyball team split its two matches in the first day of the Bruin Labor Classic at the Lied Activity Center on Friday.

Bellevue (5-1) opened the day with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 26-24) loss to No. 13 Midland University before bouncing back with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-21) sweep over the University of Great Falls.

The Bruins conclude tournament action tomorrow (Aug. 31) with a 5:00 p.m. match against Doane College.

Midland 3, Bellevue 0

Midland improved to 10-0 with a 25-23, 25-22, 26-24 sweep over the Bruins who suffered their first loss of the season.

Symone Faulkner and Sydney DeBoer led the Bruins offensively with nine kills apiece while Beth Walker recorded 31 assists, nine digs and eight kills.

Defensively, BU was paced by Annie Benson's match-high 18 digs while Meghan Evans added 17 digs.

The Bruins hit just .158 and were plagued by 22 hitting errors and seven service errors.

Ashlee Harms paced the Warriors with a match-high 11 kills and hit .357.

Bellevue 3, Great Falls 0

The Bruins held Great Falls to just .046 hitting and finished with a season-high 11 blocks en route to the 3-0 win against Great Falls.

Beth Walker notched her third double-double of the season after recording 31 assists and a team-high 13 digs.

Sunny Bell and Faulkner each tallied nine kills.

DeBoer finished with five blocks while Bell notched four and Faulkner added three.

BU hit .211 for the match with three service aces.

Great Falls fell to 4-5 on the season.
