Bruins split matches at Labor Day Classic

BELLEVUE, Neb. -- The No. 16th-ranked Bellevue University volleyball team moved to 4-3 on the season after splitting a pair of matches at the Bruin Labor Day Classic at the Lied Activity Center on Friday. BU defeated Hastings College 3-1 (26-24, 25-18, 19-25, 25-22) before dropping a hard-fought five-setter to Viterbo University 20-25, 14-25, 25-21, 26-24, 15-12.

The Bruins will wrap-up tournament action tomorrow with a 3:00 p.m. match against seventh-ranked Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) University.

Bellevue 3, Hastings 1
The Bruins won their opening match 3-1 (26-24, 25-18, 19-25, 25-22) against in-state foe Hastings. Four Bruins recorded double-digit kills and were paced by senior Kali Schnacker and freshman Sunny Bell who both blasted 14 kills apiece. Sophomore Annie Benson added 13 kills while senior Maureen Wardian finished with 11.

Junior setter Jordan Broady recorded a match-high 52 assists along with nine digs. Defensively, the Bruins were led by senior Ashley Wurdeman and sophomore Meghan Evans who each registered 16 digs. Freshman Niki Gregory added 15 digs.

Hastings was paced by Kendra Schwein who finished with a team-high 16 kills. 

Viterbo 3, Bellevue 2
After taking the first two sets, Viterbo stormed back for a 20-25, 14-25, 25-21, 26-24, 15-12 win over the Bruins in the final match of the day.

Schnacker and Bell paced the BU attack with 19 kills apiece. Benson hit .429 with 10 kills.

Broady collected her fourth double-double of the season with 51 assists and 10 digs, to go along with four kills and three blocks. 

Evans (18) and Mollie Gavin (14) combined for 32 digs to lead the Bruin defense.
