Bruins hold off Defenders for 2-1 win

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa — Buoyed by a pair of first-half goals, the Bellevue University women's soccer team defeated Dordt University 2-1 on Monday afternoon at the Dordt Soccer Complex.

Emah Maahs and Emily Weyant scored just 51 seconds apart in the game's opening 10 minutes to stake Bellevue to an early 2-0 lead.

Maahs opened the scoring in the eighth minute with the assist going to Emma Phillipson. For Maahs, it was her first goal as a Bruin.

Weyant doubled the Bruin lead in the ninth minute with her strike. The unassisted goal was her team-leading fourth of the season.

Alaina Van Zalen pulled one back for the Defenders in the 77th minute but the Bruin defense duh in and only allowed one shot the rest of the way to see the result through.

Despite being down a pair of starting midfielders, the Bruins held a 14-12 advantage in shots and an 8-5 edge in shots on goal.

Sabrina Staufenbiel made four saves to secure the victory in goal.

DeLynne Zevenbergen stopped six shots for the Defenders.

Coach Tom White:

"Credit to the ladies today as it was their third game in six days. We created a lot of chances and should of put the game to bed - a good reaction from Saturday and it's a platform to build on."
