Two late second half goals lift Bruins past Clarke, 2-0

DUBUQUE, Iowa -- After a scoreless first half, the Bellevue University women's soccer team scored two goals in the final six minutes of action to edge Clarke University 2-0 Sunday afternoon at Wahlert Field.

The Bruins improved to 5-3 overall this season while Clarke remains winless at 0-7.

Mercy Darkoah netted the game-winner with an unassisted goal in the 84th minute of action, beating CU goalkeeper Hilary Van Praag.

The Bruins added an insurance goal by Jenica Bloom on a pass from Rebecca Fairfax with just 16 seconds remaining to win, 2-0.

BU controlled the game offensively holding a 16-7 edge in shots, including a 12-4 advantage in shots on goal. The Bruins also recorded five corner kicks to the Crusaders' two.

Betsy Fischenich and Darkoah led BU with five shots apiece while Bloom tallied four, all on goal.

Caitlin Stier improved 4-3 stopping all four CU shots while recording her second shut out this year. Van Praag (0-7) recorded nine saves in the loss, her second most this season.

The Bruins will open conference play with a 12:00 p.m. match scheduled against Central Baptist College on Sept. 29 in Conway, Ark.
