Chavez signs with women's soccer program
The Bruin women’s soccer program, under head coach Andy Nicolarsen, announced the signing of Crystal Chavez to a letter of intent to compete for the Bruins this fall. She is the daughter of Francisco and Blanca Chavez and sister of former Bruin Jessica Chavez.

Chavez joins the Bruins from Omaha South High School and is the third Packer recruit in this year's signing class, joining Maria "Sammy" Sinecio and Yari Estrada. In addition to the three Omaha South signees, the Bruins have also added Mercy Darkoah (Sheffield, England/Sheffield Wednesday Ladies FC) and Sarah Hauxwell (Ralston, Neb./Ralston HS).

Chavez was a four-year varsity letterwinner and team captain at Omaha South. She anchored the defense and helped lead the team to the best record in school history during her senior season. Chavez also competed in club soccer, playing for both Gladiator and Toro FC.

Academically, Chavez was a four-year honor roll student, a recipient of the HACE award, which is given to Latino scholars of distinction, and a contributor to leadership programs while at South.

“Crystal is another exceptional student-athlete from Omaha South and we are happy to have her commitment to the program," stated Nicolarsen. "As a soccer player, Crystal is composed on the ball and makes smart decisions while at the same time being a tough defensive player. She has all the skills to develop into a very good college athlete and we are looking forward to being a part of that development," added Nicolarsen.

The 2010 Bruins (15-4-2, 5-0 MCAC) captured the MCAC regular season and tournament titles and advanced to the NAIA Women's Soccer National Championship for the first time in school history after capturing the six-team Unaffiliated Group Tournament title. Bellevue fell in the NAIA Opening Round after tying 12th-ranked Oklahoma City University 0-0, before falling 4-3 in penalty kicks in the shootout.
