Bellevue soccer programs sweep Oklahoma Wesleyan

OMAHA, Neb. – The Bellevue University women’ and men’s soccer programs won their conference matches on Saturday afternoon at Bellevue West Stadium over Oklahoma Wesleyan University. The women’s team downed the Eagles 10-0 recording their third straight shutout and first double-digit win this season followed by the 15th-rated men’s soccer team winning 5-0 to increase their win streak to eight. Women’s soccer goes to 11-3-0 for the year and into second place in the league at 3-1-0. Men’s soccer will get to 11-3-1 overall with a conference record of 3-0-0, good enough for first place and possible host for the Independent Conference Tournament held in early November.

In the first of two matches, the Bellevue University women’s team scored two minutes into the contest when junior, Whitney Ferguson, scored unassisted inside the box. Her previous shot was block but was able to follow it up sticking it into the back of the net to put Bellevue up 1-0 early. Eight minutes later, Bellevue took a 2-0 advantage when Anastasia Dascalos picked up her second goal of the season on a Jenna Pendley (3) assist. The scoring would come to a turtle pace until the 32nd minute when Pendley picked up her second assist of the match crossing it to Andrea Perez (4).

Just before half, Bellevue knocked in two more goals from Morgan Anderson and Krystyn Cullip to take a convincing 5-0 intermission lead. In the second half, Bellevue would get goals from Jenna Pendly, Meredith Shuman, Andrea Perez and Anne Marie Lind taking the double-digit 10-0 shutout victory.

Bellevue finished with a flurry of shots, 42 for the match, getting a match-high seven from Jenna Pendley. Andrea Perez would finish with six shots as Amy Stigge and Erika Roberts would add five and four respectively. After Roberts hit the cross bar twice early in the match unable to ripple the net, she did help contributed with an assist in the 63rd minute. Rachel Sternberger completed her second straight start with a 90 minute shutout in goal.

Oklahoma Wesleyan University (4-11-1, 1-4-0 MCAC) recorded a single shot all match, that came from Eden Brown midway through the first half. Kelli Crawford will get the loss in goal allowing seven goals with 13 saves in 84 minutes. Kyra Kowand would let past two goals in five minutes off the bench.

In the second match, the Bellevue University men’s soccer team would need slightly longer to record their first goal of the match, but it did come at the 5:18 mark when Tom Garrick scored his sixth goal of the season on a double assist from Mark Heath-Preston and Tom Dodds. The Bruins would pour it on the second half after the visiting Eagles held Bellevue to a 1-0 score at halftime.

In the 48th minute, Mark Heath-Preston would give Bellevue a 2-0 lead only extending it when he scored two minutes later (50:46) to pick up his 13th and 14th goals of the year. With Bellevue holding a commanding 3-0 lead, Adam Hooi scored on senior recognition day in the 71st minute, unassisted. The match would be put out of reach in the 76th minute when Casey Friend found himself behind the defense on a nice through ball from freshman, Alex Zimmer.

Bellevue finished with 26 shots for the match, 13 in each half, getting nine from Mark Heath-Preston to lead the team and six from Tom Garrick. Adam Hooi finished with three shots and two each from three other Bruin players. Sebastian Narvaez won his third straight match in goal with the shutout, his second in three games. Narvaez played all 90 minutes in goal facing four shots without one Eagle attempt on frame.

Oklahoma Wesleyan University, 5-7-3 overall and 0-3-1 in the league, remains winless in the conference as they finished with four shots. Cameron Goscha, Micah Disney, Cameel Hourani and Rob Stubbs each had shots in the loss. Cameron McNeall allowed all five goals for the Eagle keeper with five saves in 90 minutes.

Next match for the women’s soccer team will on the road next Tuesday (Oct. 28) as they will face Benedictine College at 6 p.m. before heading on the road to close out the regular season with the men’s soccer team in a double header next weekend. The conference twin-bill will be played on Saturday, November 1, against York College, kick-off scheduled for 1 p.m.
