Hennings leads BU to 56-51 win over Swedes

TABOR, Kan. -- Junior Miranda Hennings came off the bench to record a game-high 13 points as the Bellevue University women's basketball team earned a 56-51 victory over Bethany (Kan.) College Friday afternoon at the Tabor College Classic.

With the win, Bellevue improved to 3-3 on the season. Bethany fell to 3-2 overall.  

Hennings went 4-for-6 from the field and 3-of-5 in 3-point attempts while nailing all four of her free throws. She also added four rebounds in the win. 

Laura Jurek added 10 points, eight rebounds, and a pair of assists. Ashtyn Arnold chipped in with eight points and six boards. Elexis Martinez finished with seven points and seven rebounds. 

Bethany was led by Hannah Ferguson's 13 points and nine rebounds. Autumn Garret and Kisa Unruh added nine points each. 

The Bruins were just 2-for-12 from the field in the first quarter and were 0-of-4 from behind the arc as the Swedes took an 11-7 lead after the opening 10 minutes of play. BU hit 3-of-9 attempts from the charity stripe in the opening frame. 

Trailing 19-11 with 4:45 left before halftime, the Bruins closed the half on a 12-4 run to knot the contest at 23 apiece heading into the intermission. BU scored the final seven points of the quarter, capped by 3-pointers from Miranda Hennings and Ashtyn Arnold

Bellevue led the entire third quarter and scored the final four points of the stanza to take a 41-35 advantage heading into the final frame.   

Trailing by three points (54-51) with less than 30 seconds remaining in the game, the stingy BU defense forced a shot-clock violation. Martinez was fouled on the ensuing play and drained two free throws with four seconds left, sealing the 56-51 victory.  

The Bruins will conclude the tournament on Saturday (Nov. 13) when they battle the host school, Tabor College, at 3 p.m.
