BU clamps down defensively to pull away from Warriors

BELLEVUE, Neb. -- Elexis Martinez recorded a double-double to pace four Bruins in double figures as the Bellevue University women's basketball team defeated Midland University, 83-66, on Friday afternoon at the Chick-fil-A Classic.

The Bruins improve to 2-1 while Midland slips to 1-2 on the year.

Elexis Martinez finished with game highs of 22 points and 10 rebounds.

Bellevue controlled the glass, out-rebounding Midland 46-28 on the game. Joining Martinez in double figures were Faith Ross (15), Laura Jurek (10), and Miranda Hennings (10). Ross added six boards and five assists and Jurek pulled down seven rebounds.

Peyton Wingert scored a team-high 15 in the loss for the Warriors. Erin Prusa scored 13 points and Sam Shepard added 10 to join Wingert in double figures.

The game featured just one lead change and a trio of ties, all coming in the opening quarter, before Bellevue rattled off a 10-0 scoring run to grab a 10-point lead with 2:03 left in the first quarter.

Bellevue began the fourth quarter up 11 and never let Midland pull to within two possessions, limiting the Warriors to just two points over a span of the final 8:13 until a three-pointer at the buzzer. The Bruins led by as many as 20 points, 83-63, in the final minute of the game

BU is back in action tomorrow with a 3 p.m. tip-off against College of St. Mary (4-0) to close out the Chick-fil-A Classic.
