Fast start lifts BU to 69-55 win over Saints

BELLEVUE, Neb. -- The Bellevue University women's basketball team got off to a 10-0 start and never trailed as the Bruins remained undefeated in conference play with a 69-55 victory over Presentation College Saturday afternoon at the Gordon Lozier Athletic Center. 

With the win, BU improved to 12-6 on the season and 3-0 in the NSAA. Presentation dropped to 6-10 overall and 2-1 in league play. 

For the second-straight night, freshman Faith Ross led the Bruins in scoring, finishing with 19 points and six rebounds. Elexis Martinez added 18 points and four boards. Jamie Winkler was the third Bruin in double figures, registering 13 points, along with four rebounds and a pair of steals. 

Allison Cox was the lone Saint in double figures, finishing with 14 points, along with six rebounds, three assists, and two steals.  

The Bruins scored the first 10 points of the game and raced out to a 20-2 advantage before settling for a 20-6 lead after the first quarter. Ross scored eight points and grabbed three rebounds to pace BU in the opening 10 minutes. 

After shooting just 16.7 percent in the first quarter, the Saints warmed up to 42.9 percent in the second stanza, closing the gap to 36-23 at the intermission. The Bruin defense helped convert 15 points off PC turnovers in the first half. 

Ross led BU in the opening half with 11 points and four rebounds. Winkler and Martinez both scored eight points for the Bruin offense. Cox paced the Saints with six first-half points and three boards. 

The two teams traded baskets throughout the third quarter until Ross scored the final five points to give BU a 53-37 lead entering the final quarter. 

A 6-2 run to open the fourth quarter gave the Bruins a 22-point advantage at 61-39 at the seven-minute mark before BU cruised to the 14-point victory.  

The Bruins travel to Mayville, N.D. next Friday, Jan. 11 for a 5:30 p.m. conference showdown at Mayville State University.
