MADISON, S.D. -- Elexis Martinez has been named the North Star Athletic Association Women's Basketball Player of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday.

Last week she led the Bruins to a convincing 80-58 win over Grace and almost single-handedly kept the Bruins competitive with NAIA Division I Peru State, a game the Bruins dropped 59-50. Against the Royals Martinez scored 11 points, pulled down eight rebounds, blocked four shots, and recorded four steals. She followed that performance up with her first career double-double, a 17-point, 13-rebound effort against the Bobcats, where she blocked an additional three shots.

For the week Martinez averaged 14.0 points and 11.5 rebounds per game. She shot an efficient 52.4 percent from the floor, totaled seven blocked shots, and swiped four steals.

The award is the first of Martinez's career as she becomes the second Bruin to be named Women's Basketball Player of the Week (Caletria Curtis was named NSAA Player of the Week twice last season).

Martinez continues her strong start to the season as she leads the Bruins in scoring (12.8 ppg) and ranks second in rebounding (6.1 rpg). Her 12 blocked shots rank 11th nationally while her field goal percentage (61.5%) ranks second in the NSAA among players with at least five attempts per game.

Bellevue is currently 6-4 overall on the season. They host Briar Cliff University tonight at 6 p.m. at the Gordon Lozier Athletic Center in their final non-conference tune-up before the start of NSAA play.
