MAYVILLE, N.D. -- The Mayville State University women's basketball team outscored Bellevue University, 42-23 in the second half as the Comets recorded a 75-58 victory in North Star Athletic Association action Saturday afternoon at Lewy Lee Fieldhouse. 

The Bruins fell to 9-9 on the season and 3-3 in the NSAA with the loss. MSU improved to 8-6 overall and 3-3 in league play.  

Cassidy Hubbs led BU with 13 points and four blocked shots. Caletria Curtis recorded her team-leading fifth double-double, finishing with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Ryleigh McCartney added 12 points, eight rebounds, and four assists. 

Andi Gayner led the Comets with a game-high 24 points and 11 rebounds. 

Bellevue hit 4-of-7 3-pointers in the first quarter to grab a 17-12 advantage after the opening stanza. Taylor Cormier hit 2-of-3 triples in the first frame, leading BU with six points.  

After four-straight points by Hubbs extended the BU lead to seven points at 21-14 early in the second quarter, the Comets used a 9-2 run to knot the contest at 23-all with 4:44 remaining before halftime. The two teams played even the remainder of the half, with the Bruins taking a slim 35-33 margin into the intermission.

McCartney was 3-of-4 from behind the arc, leading BU in the first half with nine points, to go along with four rebounds and four assists.

Gayner paced the Comets in the opening half with 12 points and four boards.  

The Bruins hit just one field goal in the first six minutes of the third quarter as MSU raced ahead for an eight-point advantage at 45-37. Five-straight points by Curtis pulled BU to within three at 45-42 with just over three minutes left in the third. After Hubbs brought BU to within two with a short jumper, the Comets responded by scoring the final nine points of the quarter to take a 55-44 lead into the final period. 

A 3-point play by Angeliece Tucker capped a 7-0 BU run to open the fourth quarter as the Bruins battled back to within four at 55-51 at the 8:46 mark. The Comets quickly countered with 10 consecutive points and ended the game on a 20-7 run to secure the 75-58 victory. 

The Bruins will travel to Jamestown, N.D. tomorrow (Jan. 8) for a 3 p.m. NSAA contest at No. 10-ranked University of Jamestown.
