BU drops a pair at OLLU Nationwide Classic

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- The Bellevue University softball team closed out the Our Lady of the Lake Nationwide Classic with a pair of losses Sunday, falling to Ottawa (Ariz.) University, 6-5, before ending the tournament with an 8-1 loss to host school Our Lady of the Lake. 

The two losses drop the Bruins to 3-3 on the season.  

The Bruins return to action on Feb. 20-21 when they travel to Allen, Texas to compete in the Southern Collegiate States NAIA Invitational. BU will play five games in the tournament, beginning with Tabor College at 10 a.m. on Feb. 20. 

Ottawa (Ariz.) 6, Bellevue 5

Janessa Rivera drove in five runs to lead Ottawa to the 6-5 come-from-behind victory over the Bruins as BU squandered a 5-2 lead in the contest. 

Katlyn Kinman led the BU offense, going 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, and an RBI. Maricela Egan drove in a pair of runs, going 1-for-3 with a double. Ashley Young went 2-for-3 with two doubles.  

Kinman led off the game with a solo shot over the center-field fence. Egan's sacrifice fly to center field drove in Young from third to make it 2-0 in the top of the first. 

Back-to-back RBI doubles by Young and Egan stretched the BU lead to 4-0 in the top of the third frame. 

The Spirit cut the lead to 4-2 on a two-run triple to left field by Rivera in the bottom of the third. 

The Bruins responded in the top of the fourth with a sacrifice fly to left field by Kelsey Arnold that drove in Mya Montero to give BU a 5-2 cushion. 

Rivera tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the fourth with a three-run double to left and the Spirit took their first lead when the next batter, Briana Tucker, drove in Rivera with an RBI triple to right field, making it 6-5.

The Bruins managed just two baserunners the remainder of the contest as reliever Alexandra McCutcheon earned the victory for the Spirit. McCutcheon did not allow a hit while striking out four Bruins with two walks in the final 3.2 innings of the contest. 

Emily Rochford (0-1) was tagged with the loss, allowing six runs on seven hits with four walks and one strikeout in four innings of work. 

OLLU 8, Bellevue 1

Saint pitcher Angela Ramirez did not allow a BU hit until the sixth inning, while the OLLU offense pounded out 13 total hits en route to the 8-1 victory over the Bruins in the tournament's finale. The OLLU victory avenged two losses to the Bruins earlier in the tournament. 

Ariel Montgomery's RBI double to right field gave the Saints an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. 

The Saints scored five runs in the top of the third, highlighted by a three-run homer to left by Abigail Elizondo, increasing the OLLU advantage to 6-0. 

An RBI single to center field by Joanna Gonzalez plated Kaili Luna, pushing the margin to 7-0 in the top of the fifth, chasing Bruin starter Savannah Gunn

The Bruins got on the board in the top of the sixth, scoring on an RBI double to centerfield by Amanda Placzek that scored Allison O'Driscoll from third, cutting the lead to 7-1. 

Back-to-back doubles by Kaylie Norris and Gonzalez gave the Saints an 8-1 lead in the top of the seventh. 

Gunn (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing seven runs on nine hits with one strikeout in four innings in the circle. 

Ramirez (2-1) scattered two hits with three walks and seven strikeouts in seven complete innings of work.
