Bruins salvage split with Red Raiders

BELLEVUE, Neb. -- After dropping the opener 8-3, the Bellevue University softball team rebounded behind the solid pitching of freshman Cory Carrillo with a 3-1 victory over Northwestern (Iowa) College in the nightcap Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at Roy Smith Field. 

With the split, the Bruins moved to 3-1 on the season. NWC is now 5-3 overall. 

Bellevue will now travel to Kissimmee, Fla. on March 1-7 to compete in THE Spring Games. BU is scheduled to play 14 games over that span. 

Game 1: Northwestern 8, Bellevue 3 

The Red Raiders used a big fifth inning to come from behind in the 8-3 victory in the opener. 

Lauren Jurek went 1-for-1 with two RBIs to pace the Bruin offense.  

With runners on the corners, NWC scored the first run of the game in the top of the second when Jordyn Kramer was caught stealing, allowing Bri Giordano to score from third. 

The Bruins got on the board in the bottom of the second on a two-run single to right field by Jurek, and on an RBI single to right field by Ellie Bliemeister, giving BU a 3-1 advantage. 

Giordano's RBI single to right field sliced the BU lead to 3-2 in the top of the third frame. 

The Red Raiders plated five runs on five hits in the top of fifth highlighted by a grand slam from Jennifer Boeve, giving NWC a 7-3 lead. 

A groundout RBI by Jordyn Kramer extended the NWC lead to 8-3 in the top of the seventh.

Samantha Ubben allowed just one baserunner in the bottom of the seventh to preserve the five-run victory for the Red Raiders. 

Ubben (3-0) was credited with the win, scattering five hits with five walks and three strikeouts in seven innings of work. 

Emily Rochford (0-1) was tagged with the loss, giving up five runs on five hits with one walk and two strikeouts in two innings in the circle.  

Game 2: Bellevue 3, Northwestern 1

Carrillo picked up her second win of the season, allowing just three hits and three walks with seven strikeouts in seven innings of work in the nightcap as BU pulled out the 3-1 victory.  

A sacrifice fly to left field by Madison Machacek drove in Bliemeister to give the Bruins an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. 

An RBI single to left field by Kramer tied the contest at 1-1 in the top of the fourth frame.

The Bruins regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth, scoring two runs on an RBI double to right field by Ashley Young and on a run-scoring single to right by Randi Henry, pushing the BU advantage to 3-1.  

Carrillo allowed just two baserunners the remainder of the game to secure the 3-1 victory. 

Emma Schnell suffered the loss, allowing three runs on seven hits, with one walk and two strikeouts in 4.2 innings of work.
