NAIA Opening Round Schedule/Results
DODGE CITY, Kan. -- A three-run third inning sparked second-seeded University of Houston-Victoria to a 6-1 victory over No. 3-seeded Bellevue University in the Bruins' opening game of the NAIA National Championship Opening Round - Dodge City Bracket Monday at Lee Braddock Memorial Field.
The Bruins (44-19) will now play the loser of the University of Science & Arts vs. Avila contest at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday in a loser's bracket contest.
The Jaguars outhit BU, 9-7, in the contest as the Bruins stranded seven baserunners.
After a single by Emily Flores and a hit batsman, the Jaguars advanced runners to second and third on a wild pitch by Erin Sharpe in the top of the second. UHV scored the games' first run on a suicide squeeze by Marissa Longoria and misplayed grounder by BU third baseman Ashley Young, giving the Jaguars a 1-0 advantage.
An RBI triple to deep center by Gabby Davilla, a sacrifice fly to center by Michelle Revels, and a run-scoring double to center by Angelica Davidson gave UHV a 4-0 lead in the top of the third.
The Jaguar advantage extended to 5-0 in the top of the fourth with an RBI double to center by Ashley Reyna.
A solo homer to center by Emily Rochford cut the lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the fourth frame.
UHV countered in the top of the seventh with a solo homer to left field by Jamison Dumont, to make the final, 6-1.
Rochford led BU at the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a home run. Young also produced a pair of hits in the loss.
Sharpe (7-5) suffered the loss, scattering five hits with one walk and one strikeout in 3 innings pitched.
Peyton Branham improved to 11-1 on the season, allowing five hits and one walk with four strikeouts in the four innings of work. Kelsey Tidrick picked up her second save of the season, giving up just two hits in the final three innings of the contest.
