Bruins cruise to sweep over Saints

OMAHA, Neb. -- The Bellevue University softball team earned a pair of run-rule victories over Presentation College on Friday in North Star Athletic Association play at Roy Smith Field. BU won by scores of 15-1 and 9-1, both ending in five innings.  

The Bruins improved to 33-16 on the season and 15-5 in the NSAA with the sweep. Presentation fell to 4-32 overall and 3-17 in league play. 

The four-game series will conclude on Saturday with a noon doubleheader at Roy Smith Field. 

Game 1: Bellevue 15, Presentation 1 (5 innings)

The Bruins pounded out 15 hits, including two home runs and five doubles en route to the 15-1 win in five innings in the opener. 

Kaitlyn Kinman finished 2-for-2 with a home run, a double and four RBIs and Ashlyn Teran was 2-for-2 while driving in a pair of runs. Erin Sharpe went 3-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI as nine different Bruins produced hits in the victory.  

The Saints took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI double to center field by Krystle Schweers. BU countered in the bottom of the first with five runs sparked by an RBI double to right by Sharpe and a two-run double to left by Teran.

A three-run homer by Kinman and a two-run bomb by Emily Rochford extended the BU lead to 10-1 in the bottom of the second.  

Sacrifice fly balls by Rochford and Kelsey Arnold increased the Bruin advantage to 12-1 in the bottom of the third. 

The Bruins added three runs in the bottom of the fourth, highlighted by an RBI single to left field by Kayla Young and a sacrifice fly to left by Kinman to make it 15-1. 

Brieanna Brock (11-2) was credited with the win, allowing three hits and one walk with six strikeouts in three innings of work.   

Game 2: Bellevue 9, Presentation 1 (5 innings)

The Bruins took advantage of three Saint fielding errors while Monique Ashley picked up her team-leading 12th victory of the season as BU downed the Saints, 9-1, in five innings in the nightcap.  

Sharpe went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Rochford launched her second home run of the day to pace the Bruin offense.  

A two-run homer to center field by Rochford and a pair of RBI singles to left by Sharpe and Kinman gave BU a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first frame. 

BU added a fifth run in the bottom of the second following a throwing error by PC catcher Skye Carter that allowed Ellie Bliemeister to score from third. 

A line-drive RBI single to center field by Carter got the Saints on the board in the top of the third, slicing the lead to 5-1. 

A two-run single to center by Sharpe and an RBI infield single by Ashley Young expanded the BU lead to 8-1 in the bottom of the third. 

The Bruins made it 9-1 in the bottom of the fourth on Maricela Egan's RBI single to center field that scored Teran from second. 

Ashley (12-7) scattered six hits with one walk and five strikeouts in four earnings in the circle.
