Bruins take down Trojans in sweep, 9-1, 2-0

OMAHA, Neb. -- The Bellevue University softball pitching staff gave up just one run on the day as the Bruins recorded a North Star Athletic Association doubleheader sweep over visiting Dakota State University Tuesday afternoon at Roy Smith Field. BU won by scores of 9-1 and 2-0. 

With the sweep, the Bruins improved to 27-15 on the season and 10-4 in the NSAA. DSU dropped to 5-24 overall and 2-12 in league play.  

The Bruins will travel to Dickinson, N.D. on Saturday-Sunday, April 13-14, for a four-game conference series at Dickinson State University. Saturday's doubleheader will begin at 2 p.m. (central time) and Sunday's twin bill will commence at noon.  

Game 1: Bellevue 9, Dakota State 1 (6 innings)

The Bruins pounded out 13 hits and used the solid pitching of Monique Ashley to record the 9-1 victory in the opener. 

Maricela Egan went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Grace Glotfelty finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs to pace the BU offense. Erin Sharpe also drove in a pair of runs in the victory. 

The Trojans grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI single to center field by Nicole Stewart. DSU connected on three-straight hits in the opening inning but left the bases loaded as Ashley struck out Taylor Poe to end the threat and keep it a one-run game.  

Maddie Siedlik's RBI double to center field drove in Maricela Egan to tie the contest at 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning. 

A two-run single to center field by Egan gave the Bruins a 3-1 advantage in the bottom of the third frame. 

The Bruins increased the lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run single to right field by Grace Glotfelty.

A two-run homer to deep center field by Erin Sharpe pushed the margin to 7-1 in the bottom of the sixth. It marked Sharpe's team-leading seventh round-tripper of the season.

Ashlyn Teran drove in Emily Mendick with an RBI double to center field and Glotfelty's run-scoring single to left field ended the game at 9-1 later in the sixth. 

Ashley improved to 8-7 on the season, allowing just three hits, all in the first inning. She struck out eight batters in six innings in the circle.  

Stefani Gollin (2-7) suffered the loss, allowing 13 hits and seven earned runs with three walks and one strikeout in 5 2/3 innings of work.  

Game 2: Bellevue 2, Dakota State 0

Maricela Egan drove in both runs and Brieanna Brock recorded her third complete-game shutout of the season en route to the 2-0 victory in the nightcap.  

A solo shot over the right-field fence by Egan put the Bruins up 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning. Egan made it 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI double down the right-field line that scored Mendick from second. 

Brock (10-2) picked up her 10th win of the season, scattering three hits with two walks and nine strikeouts in seven innings of work. 

Xitali Lopez (3-8) was tagged with the loss, giving up eight hits with one walk and no strikeouts in six innings. 

Egan finished the day 5-for-7 with two doubles and four RBIs to pace the Bruin offense.
