ABERDEEN, S.D. -- Despite five home runs, including two from junior Erin Sharpe, the Bellevue University softball team saw its season come to an end with an 8-6 loss to Dakota State University in a loser's bracket contest Saturday afternoon at the Players Softball Complex.
The Bruins ended their season with a 32-23 overall record. DSU (21-29) advanced to meet top-seeded University of Jamestown later tonight.
Sharpe's two home runs brought her career total to 53, surpassing three-time All-American Lindsey Bredar who launched 52 round-trippers during her 2002-05 BU career.
The Bruins got out of the gates quickly as Grace Glotfelty laced a home run over the center field fence on the first pitch of the game. On the next at-bat, Sharpe blasted a home run to left field to give the Bruins an early 2-0 lead.
The Trojans responded in the bottom half of the first inning with a two-run homer to center field by Nicole Stewart, knotting the contest at 2-2.
After a two-hour weather delay, Melissa Krapf delivered a bases-loaded two-run single up the middle to give DSU a 4-2 advantage in the bottom of the second.
Sharpe launched her second homer of the game over the right-field fence to slice the DSU lead to 4-3 in the top of the third.
The Trojans scored on Taylor Poe's RBI double to deep left-center field to push the advantage back to two runs at 5-3 in the bottom of the fourth, forcing Sharpe to be replaced in the circle by Lexi LeCalsey.
A pair of RBI singles up the middle by Poe and Kailee McFadden extended the DSU advantage to 7-3 in the bottom of the fifth frame.
A solo homer to left field by Maddie Siedlik and a two-run bomb by Alex Tooley drew the Bruins to within one run at 7-6 in the top of the sixth.
Stewart pounded her second home run of the game, a solo shot to left field to give DSU an 8-6 edge in the bottom of the sixth.
The Bruins managed one base runner in the top of the seventh as the Trojans secured their second victory of the weekend over Bellevue.

Stepfani Gollin (5-5) earned the win, scattering eight hits with two walks and three strikeouts in five innings in the circle. Xitali Lopez picked up her second save of the season, allowing just one hit in the final two innings of the contest.
