VCSU sweeps Bruins, 2-1, 11-1

BELLEVUE, Neb. --  Visting Valley City State University swept Bellevue University Thursday in North Star Athletic Association softball action at the Lied Activity Center Softball Field, winning by scores of 2-1 and 11-1 in five innings. 

The loss in the first game snapped the Bruins' seven-game winning streak. With the two losses, the Bruins fell to 24-17 on the season and 6-7 in the NSAA. VCSU improved to 27-8 overall and 10-3 in league play. 

Bellevue will travel to Mayville, N.D. next Friday, April 13, for a 1 p.m. NSAA doubleheader at Mayville State University. 

Game 1: Valley City State 2, Bellevue 1 

The Vikings outhit BU, 12-5, but managed just two runs, stranding nine baserunners as VCSU held on for the 2-1 victory in the opener. 

Grace Glotfelty led the Bruins at the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a home run.  

The Vikings grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the third on an RBI single by Jayme Menard and on a ground-out RBI by Voni Culp that scored Renee Snyder from third.

Glotfelty's solo homer to left center field cut the deficit to 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning. 

The Bruins loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh, chasing starter Nichole Reed, who was replaced by Haley Butterfield. Butterfield struck out Alex Tooley and Sayde Woten to earn the save, preserving the 2-1 victory for the Vikings. 

Reed (3-0) recorded the win, allowing five hits with one walk and eight strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings of work. 

Erin Sharpe (11-3) was tagged with the loss, scattering 12 hits with no walks and eight strikeouts in seven innings in the circle.  

Game 2: Valley City State 11, Bellevue 1 (5 innings)

The Bruins were outhit 12-4 and were plagued by four errors as the Vikings completed the sweep with the 11-1 win in five innings in the nightcap.  

An RBI single up the middle by Brittney Manthie and a two-run single to left field by Clarissa De La Ossa gave VCSU a 3-0 advantage in the top of the second frame. 

A sacrifice fly to center field by Sharpe scored Glotfelty from third to cut the Viking lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the third.

The Vikings erupted for five runs in the top of the fourth, sparked by a two-run homer to center field by Kelli Moore, to increase the advantage to 8-1.

VCSU added three more runs in the top of the fifth on a fielding error by second basemen Michaela Miller that plated two runs and off a passed ball by Woten, to push the margin to 11-1. 

Butterfield (13-3) collected the win, scattering three hits with three walks and three strikeouts in 3.2 innings of work. 

Emily Rochford (2-6) suffered the loss, allowing nine hits with no walks and no strikeouts in four innings in the circle.
