HASTINGS, Neb. -- The Bellevue University softball team ran its winning streak to seven games with a doubleheader sweep at Hastings College Wednesday afternoon. The Bruins won the opener 12-2 in five innings and the nightcap, 7-1.
The Bruins improved to 24-15 on the season while the Broncos dropped to 7-19 overall.
Bellevue will host Valley City State University in a key NSAA doubleheader tomorrow, beginning at 3 p.m. at the Lied Activity Center Softball Field.
Game 1: Bellevue 12, Hastings 2 (5 innings)
The Bruins pounded out 12 hits, including five extra-base hits en route to the 12-2 win in five innings in the opener. Erin Sharpe went 3-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs to pace the BU offense. Kaitlyn Kinman went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Sayde Woten drove in two runs, going 2-for-3 with a home run.
Consecutive two-run doubles by Maddie Siedlik and Michaela Miller gave the Bruins an early 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Broncos responded in the bottom of the first, cutting the deficit to 4-2 on a two-run double to deep right field by Josie Bumgardner.
A two-run double to deep right-center field by Kinman extended the BU lead to 6-2 in the top of the second.
Two-run home runs by Woten and Sharpe increased the Bruin advantage to 10-2 in the top of the third frame.
Sacrifice fly balls by Sharpe and Kayla Young gave BU a 12-2 edge in the top of the fifth inning.
Lexi LeCalsey improved to 10-6 on the season, allowing five hits with one walk and five strikeouts in five innings of work.
Game 2: Bellevue 7, Hastings 1
Bellevue used a five-run second inning and the solid pitching of Myah Boehnke to complete the sweep with the 7-1 victory in the nightcap.
BU outhit the Broncos 9-2 in the win. Emily Gigax led the Bruins at the plate, going 4-for-4 with two RBIs.
The Bruins took a 5-0 lead in the top of the second, highlighted by a two-run single to center field by Grace Glotfelty, a sacrifice fly to center field by Alex Tooley, and a run-scoring double to center field by Woten.
An RBI single to left field by Gigax gave BU a 6-0 advantage in the bottom of the third frame.
Makana Kekaulike led off the bottom of the fourth with a solo homer to right field to slice the BU lead to 6-1.
BU added an insurance run on an RBI single to left field by Gigax in the top of the seventh, pushing the advantage to 7-1.
Boehnke (1-2) earned her first victory of the season, allowing just two hits with five walks and six strikeouts in seven-complete innings in the circle.
