Sharpe's big night propels BU to sweep over Flames

OMAHA, Neb. -- Junior All-American Erin Sharpe tossed a two-hit complete-game shutout in the opener and blasted three home runs and drove in 11 total runs to lead the Bellevue University softball team to a doubleheader sweep at College of St. Mary Tuesday in non-conference action at the CSM Softball Field. BU won by scores of 10-0 and 15-2. 

The Bruins improved to 19-15 on the season. CSM fell to 8-12 overall. 

Bellevue will return home on Thursday, March 29 for a 4 p.m. conference doubleheader against Mayville State University. 

Game 1: Bellevue 10, College of St. Mary 0 (5 innings)

Sharpe excelled in the circle and at the plate as the Bruins cruised to the 10-0 win in five innings in the opener. Sharpe tossed a two-hit complete-game shutout while also driving in six runs, including two home runs in the victory. 

Sharpe belted a solo homer over the left field fence to give BU an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. An RBI single to right field by Grace Glotfelty increased the advantage to 2-0 in the second before Sharpe's grand slam to left-center field made it 6-0 later in the same inning. 

The fifth inning saw Sharpe drive in her sixth run on a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Sayde Woten from third. Kaitlyn Kinman's two-run double and an RBI single to left field by Emily Gigax pushed the margin to 10-0 in the fifth frame.

Sharpe improved to 8-2 on the season, allowing just two hits with one walk and 10 strikeouts in five innings of work.  

Game 2: Bellevue 15, College of St. Mary 2 (6 innings)

The Bruins erupted for 11 runs in the sixth inning to pull away for the convincing 15-2 win in the nightcap. Glotfelty, Maddie Siedlik, and Michaela Miller each registered three hits in the victory as BU outhit the Flames, 16-5. 

Sharpe, Gigax, and Woten each collected home runs in the victory. Sharpe notched her second grand slam of the twin bill in the Bruins' 11-run sixth inning, to make the final, 15-2. It was her team-leading 13th home run of the season.

The 11 runs were the most scored by the Bruins in an inning this season.

Lexi LeCalsey and Emily Rochford split time in the circle with each pitching three innings. Rochford (2-5) recorded her second win of the season, scattering three hits with one walk and four strikeouts.
