Bruins sweep Spires, 6-4, 3-0

BELLEVUE, Neb. -- The Bellevue University softball team swept a pair of games Wednesday against the University of Saint Mary (Kan.) in non-conference action at the Lied Activity Center Softball Field. BU won by scores of 6-4 and 3-0.

Bellevue improved to 14-8 on the season with the two wins. USM dropped to 6-17 overall. 

The Bruins will travel to Tucson, Ariz. on March 16-18 to compete in the Tucson Invitational Games. BU will play six games over the three days, starting with a 1 p.m. contest on March 16 against Dordt College. 

Game 1: Bellevue 6, Saint Mary 4

Grace Glotfelty and Kaitlyn Kinman each collected three hits as BU outhit the Spires, 13-7, en route to the 6-4 win in the opener.  

An RBI double by Emily Gigax and a one-run single by Kinman gave the Bruins an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. The Spires responded in the top of the second with a two-out RBI double to left field by Lindsey Fishman to cut the lead to 2-1.

USM took a 4-2 lead in the top of the third frame, highlighted by a two-run double to left-center field by Cassidy Harbert. The Spires collected three hits and benefitted from a Bruin fielding error in the inning. 

A sacrifice fly by Kinman to deep-center field sliced the USM advantage to 4-3 in the bottom of the third.  

A two-run single down the left-field line by Glotfelty helped the Bruins regain the lead at 5-4 in the bottom of the fourth inning. 

Erin Sharpe's RBI single to center field gave the Bruins a two-run cushion at 6-4 in the bottom of the sixth and Lexi LeCalsey forced three-straight groundouts in the top of the seventh to preserve the win.

Kinman finished 3-for-3 with two RBIs and Glotfelty was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs to pace the Bruin offense. 

LeCalsey improved to 8-4 on the season, scattering seven hits with one walk and two strikeouts in seven innings of work. 

Game 2: Bellevue 3, Saint Mary 0

Gigax went 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead the BU offense and Sharpe tossed a two-hit shutout as BU completed the sweep with the 3-0 win in the nightcap. It marked the Bruins' fourth shutout victory of the season. 

The Bruins used RBI doubles by Sharpe and Gigax to take an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.  

A triple by Maddie Siedlik followed by an RBI single from Alex Tooley pushed the BU lead to 3-0 in the fourth inning.

Sharpe allowed just two hits with one walk and seven strikeouts in seven complete innings of work, improving to 6-1 on the season.
