CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Bellevue University softball team split a pair of games on their final day of competition at THE Spring Games on Friday. BU knocked off No. 4-ranked Marian, 2-1, to open the day before succumbing to Trinity Christian by a 4-0 final.
The Bruins are now 12-8 on the season. BU will host the University of Saint Mary (Kan.) in its home debut on Wednesday, March 14 in a 4 p.m. doubleheader at the Lied Center Softball Field.
Bellevue 2, Marian 1
The Bruins used the clutch pitching of Lexi LeCalsey and timely hitting to pull out a 2-1 upset victory over No. 4-ranked and previously undefeated Marian University in BU's first game of the day.
Marian collected the game's first run in the top of the second when Katie Hewitt scored from third on a passed ball by BU catcher Sayde Woten.
The Bruins tied the contest at 1-1 in the bottom of the third on Sarah Zeleny's RBI infield single that scored Woten from third.
BU took its first lead of the game in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single to left field by Emily Gigax, scoring Kaitlyn Kinman, giving the Bruins a 2-1 advantage.
LeCalsey got out of jams in the fifth and seventh innings, improving to 7-4 on the season. She did not allow an earned run while scattering five hits with three walks and three strikeouts in seven innings of work.
Breena Smith (3-1) suffered the loss, allowing five hits and two earned runs with one walk and four strikeouts in five innings in the circle.
Zeleny finished 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead the BU offense in the win.
Trinity Christian 4, Bellevue 0
The Bruins managed just four hits against Trinity Christian pitcher Dara Megyesi as they fell 4-0 to the Trolls to wrap up their Florida trip with a 6-6 overall record.
The Trolls grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, scoring on a sacrifice fly to left field by Jamie Budreau that plated Makayla Otto from third.
Budreau's solo home run to center field extended the TCC lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth frame.
The Trolls made it 4-0 in the bottom of the sixth, scoring on an RBI single to left field by Budreau and a one-run single to center field by Chloe McRobbie.
BU went down in order in the seventh to end the game. Sarah Zeleny, Kaitlyn Kinman, Maddie Siedlik, and Alex Tooley accounted for Bellevue's hits.
