FORT WORTH, Texas -- The Bellevue University softball team opened the 2018 season winning two-of-three games on Friday at the Cowtown Classic. The Bruins opened the day with a 10-0 shutout win over the University of Saint Mary (Kan.), followed by a 17-2 victory over William Penn University in five innings. Bellevue finished the day with a 3-2 loss to Texas Wesleyan University.
The Bruins will conclude the tournament on Saturday with a 9 a.m. contest against McPherson College followed by a 3 p.m. matchup with Oklahoma Panhandle State University.
All-American Erin Sharpe led the Bruin offense on the day, going 6-for-8 with four doubles, two home runs, and six RBIs. Her slugging percentage was 2.000 on the day. Grace Glotfelty finished 6-for-11 on the day with two doubles, a home run, and seven RBIs.
Bellevue 10, Saint Mary (Kan.) 0 - (6 innings)
Lexi LeCalsey tossed a two-hit shutout and the Bruins got multiple RBIs from four players as BU opened the 2018 campaign with the 10-0 shutout victory over USM.
The Bruins grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the third on an RBI double by Glotfelty and a one-run single by Maddie Siedlik. Bellevue made it 6-0 in the top of the fourth with a sacrifice fly to left field by Siedlik, an RBI double by Sharpe to center field and a two-run single by Kayla Young to left field.
Sharpe's two-run homer to left field made it 8-0 in the top of the sixth. The Bruins completed the game's scoring with a two-run triple by Emily Gigax to left field to make the final, 10-0.
LeCalsey (1-0) allowed just two hits and two walks with eight strikeouts in six innings of work.
Sharpe finished 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and three RBIs. Siedlik was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.
Bellevue 17, William Penn 2 - (5 innings)
The Bruins erupted for 16 runs in the first two innings and pounded out 13 hits in the 17-2 victory over William Penn. The game ended after five innings on the eight-run mercy rule.
Glotfelty went 3-for-3 with a double, a home run and six RBIs. Sharpe finished 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBIs on a double and a homer. Sarah Zeleny and Kayla Young both drove in a pair of runs in the victory as eight Bruins registered at least one hit.
The highlight of the contest came in the second frame when six different Bruins recorded a double, including four-consecutive from Glotfelty, Siedlik, Sharpe, and Young.
Sharpe (1-0) picked up the win, scattering six hits with no walks and two strikeouts in three innings in the circle.
Texas Wesleyan 3, Bellevue 2
The Bruins rally fell just short in the bottom of the seventh as Texas Wesleyan escaped with a 3-2 win in the BU's final game of the day.
Sharpe went 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI and two walks to pace the BU offense.
The Rams took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a fielder's choice bunt by Taylor Sutton that scored Jenna Rhoades from third. TWU extended the lead to 3-0 in the second on an RBI single to left field by Bailey Terry and on a BU fielding error by Gigax at shortstop.
The Bruins got on board in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI double to center field by Sharpe that scored Glotfelty from first, slicing the lead to 3-1. An error by right fielder Hailey Hollingsworth allowed Sharpe to score making it a one-run game with two outs. Lauren Wernet forced a pop out to third base by Sayde Woten to earn the save.
Emily Rochford (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing nine hits and two walks with two strikeouts in six innings of work.
