DICKINSON, N.D. -- A walk-off RBI single by Michaela Miller gave the Bellevue University softball team a dramatic 2-1 win in eight innings over Mayville State University Saturday afternoon at the North Star Athletic Association Tournament at North Softball Complex.
The top-seeded Bruins advanced to the best-of-3 championship series against No. 2 seed University of Jamestown. The two teams will play the first game of the championship series at 1 p.m. on Sunday, with the second game set for 3:30 p.m. Sunday.
The Comets end their season at 22-26.
A solo homer by Erin Sharpe, her 27th of the season, gave the Bruins a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third. The Comets countered in the top of the fifth with Daisy Macias' solo shot over the right-field fence to knot the contest at 1-1.
Neither team threatened again until the top of the eighth when MSU's led off the inning with a single by pitcher Shaye Kemball and a double by Macias to produced runners on second and third with no outs. Kelli Fisher got out of the jam when Kiana Ishikawa flew out to left field and Hannah Carter through out Kemball at the plate. Fisher then induced a ground out to Lauren Coronado to end the threat.
After Sharpe was walked to lead off the bottom half of the eighth, pinch runner Sarah Zeleny advanced to second on a stolen base and was driven in by Michaela Miller's RBI single to center field to end the game.
Fisher improved to 29-4 on the season, scattering six hits with no walks and seven strikeouts in eight innings in the circle.
Kemball (11-14) was tagged with the loss after allowing two runs on seven hits with four walks and three strikeouts in eight innings of work.
Carter and Alex Tooley each produced a pair of hits in the win, while Sharpe finished 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
The winning RBI single by Michaela Miller was her only at-bat of the contest.
Macias led the Comets at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double, a home run and an RBI.
