JAMESTOWN, N.D. -- After seeing its 16-game winning streak snapped, the Bellevue University softball team rebounded at the University of Jamestown, with Kelli Fisher's one-hit complete-game shutout in the second contest. The Jimmies took the opener, 3-2, before the Bruins salvaged the split with the 3-0 win in the nightcap.
With the split, the Bruins now have a two-game lead in the North Star Athletic Association standings with a 15-3 conference record and a 36-9 overall mark. Jamestown owns a 14-6 league mark and is 29-17 overall on the season.
Bellevue returns home on Wednesday, April 19, when they host College of St. Mary in a 6 p.m. doubleheader at the Lied Activity Center Softball Field.
Game 1: Jamestown 3, Bellevue 2
The Bruins took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first on Erin Sharpe's sacrifice fly to right field that scored Hannah Carter. Jamestown quickly countered with an RBI single to center by Emma Keller that tied the contest at 1-1 in the bottom of the first.
Tifani Schorzman drove in Mikayla Frost with a single to right to give the Jimmies' their first lead at 2-1 in the bottom of the third inning.
Bellevue quickly tied the contest at 2-2 with an RBI single to left by Emily Gigax in the top of the fourth frame. The Jimmies responded in the bottom of the fourth, regaining the lead at 3-2 on Linda Ontiveros' RBI double to right field.
That was all the scoring UJ would need as the Jimmies used the combination of pitchers Hanna Dunnigan, Emma Keller and Brittany Rheault to hold the Bruins at bay and preserve the 3-2 win, snapping BU's 16-game winning streak.
Lexi LeCalsey (9-4) was tagged with the loss, allowing five hits with one walk and six strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work. Hannigan (13-7) earned the win, scattering four hits with no walks and four strikeouts in four innings in the circle. Rheault earned the save, allowing two baserunners, while striking out two in the seventh inning.
Game 2: Bellevue 3, Jamestown 0
After allowing one hit in the first inning, Kelli Fisher retired 20 of the final 21 batters in notching her fourth shutout of the season. Fisher (21-3), who earned her 21st win of the season, did not allow a walk while striking out nine batters in the win. She faced just 23 batters in the contest.
Neither team scored until a pair of RBI singles to right field by Randi Henry and Carter gave BU a 2-0 advantage in the top of the fourth.
A bases-loaded walk to Emily Miller provided an insurance run in the top of the seventh, extending the Bruin lead to 3-0.
