MITCHELL, S.D. -- Senior Kelli Fisher became the school's all-time wins leader as the Bellevue University softball team swept Dakota State University Sunday afternoon in North Star Athletic Association action at Thue Softball Complex. Bellevue won by scores of 3-2 and 22-3.
Fisher earned the win in the opener, marking the 78th victory of her career. She surpassed Kari Witherspoon who recorded 77 wins during her 1997-2000 career.
The Bruins improved to 33-8 on the season and 12-2 in the NSAA. Bellevue has now won 14-straight games and 25 of their last 26 contests. DSU fell to 11-24 overall and 4-14 in league play.
Bellevue will host Hastings College in a 4 p.m. non-conference doubleheader on Wed., April 12 at the Lied Activity Center Softball Field.
Game 1: Bellevue 3, Dakota State 2
Neither team threatened until the top of the fifth when the Bruins strung together three-straight hits, including an RBI triple by Kaitlyn Kinman and an RBI double by Erin Sharpe, giving BU a 2-0 advantage.
Sarah Zeleny drove in Kaitlyn Goney with a single to left field to extend the Bruin lead to 3-0 in the top of the sixth.
The Trojans made it interesting in the bottom of the seventh when a two-run homer by Tatum Ronke sliced the deficit to 3-2. Fisher, however, forced two-straight groundouts to earn her 19th win of the season and set the school record for all-time victories.
Fisher (19-3) scattered four hits and one walk with six strikeouts in seven complete innings in the circle.
Game 2: Bellevue 22, Dakota State 3 (5 innings)
The Bruins tied a school record with 22 hits as BU cruised to the 22-2 victory in the nightcap. Led by Alex Tooley's four hits, 12 Bruins registered at least one hit in the win and six had multiple hits.
Hannah Carter set the tone by leading off the nightcap with a solo homer over the right field fence and Emily Gigax added a two-run double, while Sharpe drove in another run as BU took a 4-0 first-inning lead.
Consecutive doubles by Kayla Schmell and Nicole Stewart narrowed the lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the first.
The Bruins sent 13 players to the plate in the third, scoring nine runs on eight hits highlighted by a 3-run homer by Sayde Woten, as BU pushed the lead to 13-1.
A solo homer by Jasmin Lucero in the bottom of the third cut the lead to 13-2.
The Bruins batted through the lineup again in the fourth, scoring five runs on five hits to increase the advantage to 18-2.
Bellevue added four more runs in the fifth and the Trojans scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth to make the final, 22-3.
Lexi LeCalsey (8-3) earned the win, allowing six hits, two earned runs and three walks, while striking out six in five innings of work.
