OMAHA, Neb. -- The Bellevue University softball team continued its hot streak Sunday, sweeping a non-conference doubleheader at the College of St. Mary, 7-2 in the opener and 3-2 in the nightcap.
The Bruins improved to 27-8 on the season and have won eight-straight games and 19 of their last 20. The Flames fell to 10-12 overall.
Bellevue will travel to Fremont, Neb. for a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday, April 6 beginning at 5 p.m.
Game 1: Bellevue 7, College of St. Mary 2
The Bruins scored five runs in the fifth and sixth innings to pull away for the 7-2 win in the opener.
Erin Sharpe's RBI double drove in Sydney Robertson to give BU an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. The Flames tied the contest on Alyssa Beal's sacrifice fly to right field in the bottom of the second.
The Bruins regained a 2-1 advantage in the top of the third on a fielder's choice RBI by Kaitlyn Kinman in the top of the third. Hannah Carter, Randi Henry and Sharpe each drove in runs in the top of the fifth to extend the BU lead to 5-1.
A solo homer by CSM's Brittney Banks in the bottom of the fifth sliced the lead to 5-2.
An RBI single by Maddie Siedlik and a bases-load walk to Alex Tooley pushed the Bruin advantage to 7-2 in the top of the sixth.
Lexi LeCalsey (7-3) earned her seventh win of the season, allowing two hits and one walk, while striking out eight batters in 4.2 innings of relief.
Jessica Thurber (1-2) was tagged with the loss after giving up six earned runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out three.
Game 2: Bellevue 3, College of St. Mary 2
The Bruins used a three-run sixth inning and held off a late Flame rally to record the 3-2 win in the nightcap.
Neither team scored until an RBI single by Courtney Schendt and a two-run triple by Tooley gave BU a 3-0 lead in the top of the sixth frame.
The Flames made it interesting in the bottom of the seventh with a two-out two-run homer by Kimberly Merwald, to narrow the BU lead to 3-2. Kelli Fisher earned her third save of the season by forcing a ground out to preserve the 3-2 Bruin victory.
Sharpe earned the win staying perfect on the season at 5-0. She allowed just one hit and one walk while striking out two Flames in five innings of work.
