CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Bellevue softball team was limited to three runs on seven hits as they lost twice on their first day at the PFX Spring Games. The Bruins fell 7-3 to NCAA Division II Gannon University in their first game of the day before coming out on the short end of 1-0 decision against #2 Saint Xavier University.
Bellevue has now lost three straight games to fall to 7-6 overall. The Bruins will be back in action tomorrow with games against Calumet College of Saint Joseph and Siena Heights University.
Game One: Gannon 7, Bellevue 3
Gannon jumped on BU starter Myah Boehnke (L, 0-2) early, scoring seven runs in the game's first two innings and held on for a 7-3 victory over Bellevue in the Bruins' first game at the PFX Spring Games.
Kherrin Morgan put the Golden Knights on the board in the top of the first with a two-run home run.
Jackie Martinez delivered an RBI-single with one out in the second inning before Taylor Wilp sent a three-run homer over the fence to put Gannon up 6-0. Lisa Szajn doubled in a run later in the inning to cap the scoring.
Hannah Carter and Emily Gigax both had multi-hit games for the Bruins who put up three runs in the bottom of the seventh but it was too little, too late.
Carter had Bellevue's lone RBI, on a one-out single in the seventh to score Sayde Woten and cut the deficit to 7-2. Bellevue also scored when both Michaela Miller and Emily Miller reached on errors but a groundout with two runners on base ended the BU threat.
Olivia Gumbita (W, 4-2) picked up the win in the circle for Gannon with a complete game effort. She allowed just one earned run (three total) on six hits and struck out six.
Lexi LeCalsey, who didn't factor in the decision, pitched well in relief for BU. She fired five innings of shutout relief, striking out five and allowing just one hit, to try and give the Bellevue offense a chance to get back into the game.
Game Two: #2 Saint Xavier 1, Bellevue 0
Breanna Graffeo's two-out single to right in the bottom of the fourth scored Katie Gloff for the game's lone run as St. Xavier eked a narrow 1-0 victory over the Bruins in their second game of the day.
Kelli Fisher (L, 6-2) continued her dominant senior campaign in the circle by firing a complete game in which she allowed just one run on seven hits.
Callie Brown (W, 1-1) earned the win opposite of Fisher after shutting out Bellevue and limiting the Bruins to just one hit while striking out eight.
Sayde Woten singled in the second inning to record BU's lone hit in the game.
