FAYETTE, Mo. -- Freshman Michaela Miller's RBI walk-off double gave the Bellevue University softball team a dramatic, 2-1, win in eight innnings over Cardinal Stritch University at the NAIA Softball Opening Round at Cox Sports Complex Tuesday night.
Bellevue (41-13-1) advanced to play host Central Methodist University at 1 p.m. Wednesday. If the Bruins win that game, it would force a second championship game 30 minutes after the completion of the first contest.
Miller drove in both games for BU in the win.
The Wolves took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on a suicide squeeze from Jill Andreoni that scored Gabi Palacios from third.
The Bruins tied it up in the bottom of the sixth on Miller's solo shot over the left field fence.
BU got out of a jam in the top of the seventh when Katie Herberg led off the inning with a double to left center field and was sacrificed to third by Laura Van Wy. Starter Taylor Mohler induced two pop-ups to end the threat.
Kelli Fisher replaced Mohler in top of the eighth and retired the final two batters to keep the scored knotted at 1-1.
Miller drove in Emily Gigax who doubled to left field earlier in the eighth inning, to extend the Bruins' 2015 season.
Mohler finished with four strikeouts, tying her for the Bruins' single-season record with 240 strikeouts, equalling Amanda Neumann's total in 2011.
Fisher (18-5) earned the win, getting one strike and allowing one hit in the Wolves' final three at bats.
