BU picks up a pair of run-rule wins over Division III opponents

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Bellevue University softball team picked up a pair of five-inning run-rule wins Wednesday at the National Training Center Spring Games, downing DeSales University, 8-0, and Roanoke College, 9-1. Both opponents are NCAA Division III institutions. 

The Bruins improved to 4-6 on the season with the two wins and have now won three-straight games. 

Freshman Alex Tooley led the BU offense, going 5-for-6, with three RBIs and two doubles. Courtney Schendt went 3-for-5 with two triples and three RBIs. Ashley Gigax belted her first home run of the season in the win over Roanoke, finishing the day 2-for-5 with three RBIs, a double, a home run and three runs scored. 

Bellevue will continue action at the tournament on Thursday (Mar. 5) with a 4 p.m. game against Concordia (NY) College and a 6 p.m. contest versus Grace (Ind.) College.

Bellevue 8, DeSales 0

The Bruin offense pounded out 11 hits, while the BU defense recorded its first shutout of the season in Bellevue's 8-0 win over DeSales in the opener.

Bellevue grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Shelby Kindelin stole third and scored on an error by Bulldog catcher Haley Frati. 

BU increased the margin to 3-0 in the top of the fourth on RBI singles by Schendt and Kendall Hendrix

The Bruins put the game away in the top of the fifth, scoring five runs on five hits, highlighted by an RBI double by Sayde Woten, an RBI triple by Schendt and a one-run single by Emily Gigax

Kelli Fisher improved to 3-1 on the season, allowing just three hits with one walk and three strikeouts in five innings in the circle.

Tooley went 3-for-3 with three RBIs, two doubles and two runs score to lead the Bruins to the 9-1 victory over Roanoke.  

An RBI triple by Schendt and a two-run double by Tooley gave the Bruins a 3-0 advantage in the bottom of the first inning. 

The Bruins added five runs in the second frame, sparked by a three-run homer by Ashley Gigax.

The Maroons got on the board in the top of the fourth on an RBI double to left field by Samantha Baldwin, cutting the BU lead to 8-1. 

Tooley drove in Ashley Gigax in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single to right center field to extend the BU lead to 9-1. 

Taylor Mohler (1-4) picked up her first win of the season, scattering three hits and two walks with five strikeouts in five innings of work.
