Bruins fall to No. 25 Central Baptist, rout Haskell

BELLEVUE, Neb. -- For the second-straight day, the Bellevue University softball team split its two games in the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference Crossover at Hall of Fame Fields on Saturday.

No. 25 Central Baptist College edged Bellevue, 3-2, in the first game before the Bruins cruised to a 14-0 win, in five innings, over Haskell Indian Nations University in the finale.

The Bruins will travel to Forest City, Iowa on Tuesday, April 15 for a conference doubleheader at Waldorf College. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m. at Al Buckley Field.

Game 1: Central Baptist 3, Bellevue 2

Central Baptist scored runs in the fifth and sixth innings as they defeated Bellevue, 3-2.

Ashley Gigax belted a two-run line-drive home run to center field in the bottom of the fourth, scoring Sydney Robertson, who led the inning off with a single.

The Mustangs responded in the fifth and cut BU's lead in half, 2-1, on Joella Bayles' solo home run.

CBC used back-to-back two-out RBI singles to take a 3-2 advantage in the top of sixth.

Shelby Kindelin led the home half of the sixth off with a triple, but Mustang starting pitcher Jessica Sheldon struck out two batters and forced a fly out to preserve the one-run lead.

Katie Malloy notched a lead-off double in the seventh, but two fly outs and a strikeout ended the game.

Sheldon (17-5) struck out the first eight BU batters and finished with 15 en route to her conference-best 17th win.

Kelli Fisher suffered the loss and dropped to 13-4 on the season and recorded seven strikeouts in six innings of work.

CBC improved to 26-7 and 12-3 in the MCAC with the win.

Game 2: Bellevue 14, Haskell Indian Nations 0 (5 innings)

Four Bruins registered multi-hit games and Taylor Mohler struck out 12 as Bellevue cruised to a 14-0 win against the Indians.

Katy Shupe went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, four RBIs and a home run while Courtney Schendt also had a three-hit game and added two runs and two RBIs.

Mohler improved her record to 10-7 in the one-hit shutout win. She held HINU without a hit through the first 4.1 innings.

The first four batters reached base and Schendt adnd Shupe both notched two-run singles. The Bruins also scored on a fielder's choice to take a 5-0 run after the first inning. 

Shupe hit a solo home run and Augusta Ratliff added an RBI double before coming around to score on a wild pitch to extend BU's lead to 8-0 in the second.

The Bruins added to their lead in the third, scoring four runs on four hits. Gigax and Shupe both recorded RBI hits while Malloy registered a sacrifice fly. The Bruins also scored on a HINU error.

Kindelin tallied an RBI double and Kaitlyn Goney added a run-scoring groundout in the fourth.

Lacie Unah fell to 0-10 and allowed 14 runs on 14 hits in four innings.

HINU remains winless on the season and dropped to 0-20 overall and 0-14 in league play.
