Bruins collect doubleheader sweep at Buena Vista, 5-0, 14-1

BUENA VISTA, Iowa -- The Bellevue University softball team swept NCAA Division III Buena Vista University on Sunday in non-conference action on the BVU campus. The Bruins shut out BVU 5-0 in the opener, before taking the nightcap, 14-1.

Bellevue improved to 35-8 on the season with the two wins. The Beavers dropped to 14-20 overall. 

The Bruins will conclude the regular season with a 3 p.m. conference doubleheader on Monday (April 29) at Waldorf College in Forest City, Iowa. 

Game 1: Bellevue 5, Buena Vista 0

Amanda Neuman went 1-for-3 with two RBIs to lead the Bruins to the 5-0 shutout win in the opener. Augusta Ratliff also homered in the game and Katie Malloy drove in a run, while Shelby Kindelin and Kelsie Bridgeford both collected two hits in the win.

After a scoreless first two innings, the Bruins got on the board with a solo homer to left field by Neumann, putting BU up 1-0 in the top of the third. 

Bellevue added three runs in the top of the fifth, highlighted by a sacrfice fly to right field by Neumann and an RBI single by Malloy, pushing the lead to 4-0. 

Ratliff's solo homer to left field in the top of the sixth completed the game's scoring. 

Taylor Mohler (11-3) earned the win, scattering six hits with 12 strikeouts and three walks in seven innings of work. 

Game 2: Bellevue 14, Buena Vista 1

Bellevue pounded out 18 hits while cruising to the 14-1 win in the nightcap. 

Kindelin went 4-for-5 with five RBIs, while also picking up the complete-game win.

Malloy, Bridgeford and Katie Tew all blasted home runs in the win. Taylor Anderson finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. 

The Bruins used three-consecutive two-out RBI singles from Anderson, Ratliff, and Kindelin to take a 3-0 lead in the top of the second frame. 

Molloy homered to right-center field in the top of the third to move the lead to 4-0.

Bellevue added three more runs in the fourth as Anderson, Kindelin, and Neumann all drove in runs, giving BU a 7-0 margin.

The Bruins made it 8-0 in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by Kindelin.

The Beavers avoided the shutout, scoring on an RBI single by Jesse Bibler in the bottom of the fifth to slice the lead to 8-1.

Bellevue exploded for six runs in the top of the seventh, sparked by a solo homer from Tew, a two-run double by Kindelin, and a two-run homer by Bridgeford, to extend the lead to 14-1.

Kindelin improved to 13-2 on the season, allowing eight hits while striking out two and walking three in seven innings.
