Bellevue splits with Flames in MCAC doubleheader

OMAHA, Neb. -- The Bellevue University softball team split with College of St. Mary in Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference action Wednesday afternoon at Westgate Field, winning 3-0 in the opener, before falling 4-3 in the nightcap. 

Bellevue moved to 29-8 on the season and 9-2 in the MCAC. CSM is 12-17 overall and 7-8 in league play. 

The Bruins will travel to York, Neb. tomorrow (April 25) for a 3 p.m. conference doubleheader at York College. 

Game 1: Bellevue 3, College of St. Mary 0

An RBI single by Taylor Anderson in the top of the second and a two-run homer by Amanda Neumann in the top of the fifth provided all the scoring in the Bruins' 3-0 victory.

Shelby Kindelin (10-2) notched her third shutout of the season, allowing just one hit with eight strikeouts and one walk in seven innings in the circle.

Kindelin had a no-hitter going until the bottom of the seventh inning, when Shelbi Hatfield led off with a single to left field for the Flames' lone hit of the game. 

Game 2: College of St. Mary 4, Bellevue 3

CSM scored three fifth-inning runs to rebound for the 4-3 win in the nightcap. 

A sacrifice fly to left field by Kelsie Bridgeford drove in Alyssa Matoba to give the Bruins an early 1-0 advantage in the top of the first frame. 

The Flames tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth, scoring on an RBI single by Hannah Mays that plated Mariah Gibson.

Bellevue quickly answered with a two-run single by Neumann in the top of the fifth, giving BU a 3-1 lead. 

CSM responded with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, on RBI doubles by Caitlin Rodenburg and Gibson and an RBI single by Natasha Chapman, giving the Flames their first lead of the day at 4-3.

The Bruins threatened in the top of seventh when Kindelin led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a fly out to right field by Neumann. The Flames ended the threat after forcing a ground out to secure the 4-3 win. 

Neumann suffered the loss, giving up three runs in the fifth, falling to 9-3 on the season. 

Gibson (7-9) registered the win, scattering eight hits with three strikeouts and three walks in seven innings.
