Bruins earn sweep over Midland, 5-1, 5-4

BELLEVUE, Neb. -- The Bellevue University softball team ran its winning streak to 10 games, registering a doubleheader sweep over Midland University, winning 5-1 in the opener before holding on for a 5-4 victory in the nightcap. 

Bellevue improved to 18-6 on the season with the two wins. Midland dropped to 6-13 overall. 

The Bruins will travel to McPherson, Kan. this Friday-Saturday, April 5-6 for five conference games in the MCAC Crossover. 

Game 1: Bellevue 5, Midland 1

After giving up two hits in the first three Warrior at bats, sophomore Shelby Kindelin settled down and surrendered only one more hit the remainder of the contest as the Bruins defeated Midland, 5-1, in the opener. 

The Bruins pounded out 10 hits with Alyssa Matoba leading the way, going 3-for-3 with an RBI.

The Warriors grabbed an early 1-0 lead with an RBI single to left field by Nicole Andrews in the top of the first. Bellevue responded in the bottom of the second inning, scoring four runs on RBI singles by Kindelin and Matoba and a two-run single by Amanda Neumann

An RBI double to left field by Kelsie Bridgeford in the bottom of the fourth increased the BU lead to 5-1. 

Kindelin improved to 6-2 on the season, scattering three hits with nine strikeouts and two walks in seven innings of work. 

Game 2: Bellevue 5, Midland 4

The Bruins scored five runs on home runs by Neumann and Katie Tew before holding on for a 5-4 win in the nightcap. 

Matti Petersen blasted a three-run homer in the top of the second to give the Warriors a 3-0 lead. The Bruins answered in the bottom half of the second, tying the game at 3-3 on a three-run blast by Tew.  

Bellevue took its first lead of the game on a two-run homer by Neumann in the bottom of the third to gain a 5-3 advantage. 

Midland made it interesting in the top of the seventh, slicing the lead to 5-4 with an RBI double by Kourtney Wallick, forcing Amanda Neumann to be replaced in the circle by Taylor Mohler. Mohler earned her third save of the season, securing the win with a line out to left field to end the game. 

Neumann got the win, improving to 6-1 on the season while giving up five hits with six strikeouts and one walk in 6 2/3 innings.
