BU shuts out Mayville; Takes down Dickinson in extra innings

SIOUX CITY, Iowa -- The Bellevue University softball team ran its winning streak to eight games with a pair of wins Friday afternoon at the Morningside Invitational. The Bruins shut out Mayville State, 5-0, before topping Dickinson State, 9-3, in eight innings. 

Bellevue improved to 16-6 on the season with the two wins. 

The Bruins conclude the tournament on Saturday (March 30) with a 1 p.m. game against Valley City State and 5 p.m. contest versus Dakota State. 

Bellevue 5, Mayville State 0

Taylor Mohler tossed a no-hitter and the Bruins took advantage of 11 walks en route to the 5-0 shutout win over Mayville State in the opener.

Mohler improved to 6-3 on the season, with seven strikeouts and one walk in seven innings of hitless work in the circle.  

The Comets' starter Katrina Newman gave up a pair of bases-loaded walks in the bottom of the second inning, giving the Bruins an early 2-0 lead. 

Katie Tew scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fourth to move the BU lead to 3-0. 

An RBI single by Alyssa Matoba and a one-run double by Amanda Neumann extended the margin to 5-0 in the bottom of the sixth frame. 

Samantha Swimley ruined Mohler's perfect game after drawing a walk in the top of the seventh inning. Mohler retired 20-straight batters before giving up the walk. 

Bellevue 9, Dickinson State 3 (8 innings)

Bellevue exploded for six runs in the eighth inning to pull out a 9-3 win over Dickinson State in BU's second game of the tournament. 

Augusta Ratliff went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Neumann finished 2-for-4 with two doubles, while driving in two runs. Katie Malloy went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. 

The Bruins raced out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first as Neumann and Katie Malloy drove in runs. DSU quickly tied the game in the bottom of the first on Alex Vargas' two-run double. 

An RBI single by Monique Yslas gave the Blue Hawks a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Bellevue quickly answered in the top of the sixth, tying the game with an RBI double by Malloy.

Neumann laced an RBI double to right field in the top of the eighth to give BU a 4-3 advantage. The Bruins added two more runs following a bases-loaded throwing error by DSU.Ratliff gave BU a six-run margin at 9-3 following a three-run double to complete the game's scoring.

Neumann (5-1) earned the win, scattering eight hits with four strikeouts and three walks in eight innings of work.
