BU clinches tie for MCAC crown; routs Haskell

LAWRENCE, Kan. -- The Bellevue University softball team finished in at least a tie for the MCAC regular season crown with fourth-ranked Central Baptist College after sweeping Haskell Indian Nations University on Saturday afternoon in league action. The Bruins took the opener 10-0 before posting an 11-1 victory in the finale.

Bellevue has now won 15-straight games and finished the regular season with a 42-14 overall mark and a 13-1 record in the MCAC. Haskell remains winless and fell to 0-33 and 0-12 in league play.

The Bruins have a half-game lead over Central Baptist in the MCAC standings. CBC plays a single game at College of St. Mary on Sunday. If the Mustangs win that game, Bellevue and CBC will share the regular-season title.

The Indians committed 12 errors and were outhit 24-3 by the Bruins in the doubleheader.

The 2012 MCAC Softball Tournament will be held on Thursday-Friday, May 3-4 . Times, location, and pairings will be announced on Monday.

Game 1: Bellevue 10, Haskell 0 (5 innings)
BU outhit HINU 12-2 and stole four bases to cruise to the 10-0 five-inning win in game one.

Katie Tew went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs and Shelby Kindelin added two hits and three RBIs. Kindelin also picked up the win in the circle and improved to 10-4 on the season, allowing just two hits with five strikeouts in the complete game shut out.

The Bruins opened the scoring in the second, scoring five runs on six hits and took advantage of two throwing errors. Kindelin registered two RBIs and Kelsie Bridgeford, Kim Wees and Tew each tallied an RBI apiece to lead the BU offense.

BU put three more runs on the scoreboard in the third inning, scoring on RBI hits by Kindelin and Katie Malloy while adding another run on a fielding error.

Tew's two-run double in the fifth ended the game's score to give the Bruins the 10-run win.

Kendall Calderon (0-14) suffered the loss for the Indians, allowing 10 runs on 12 hits with two walks.

Game 2: Bellevue 11, Haskell 1 (6 innings)
 Eight different players recorded a hit and BU stole a season-high seven bases en route to an 11-1 win in the nightcap.

Taylor Mohler improved to 19-5 this season, allowing just one run on one hit with one walk and nine strikeouts.

BU struck first, scoring on a fielding error by HINU's shortstop that allowed Kindelin to score in the opening frame.

The Indians tied the game at 1-1 with an RBI groundout by Christen Voice in the bottom of the second.

The Bruins took advantage of a two-out error to regain the lead, 2-1. Bridgeford hit an RBI triple down the left field line to allow Brooke Ellis to cross home plate.

Kindelin's fourth inning single to left center scored Melissa Ackley to give the Bruins a 3-1 advantage.

BU added to its lead in the fifth with an RBI triple by Ellis and a run-scoring single from Kathryn Wardian.

The Bruins scored six runs on five hits in the sixth inning. Neumann, Ellis, Bridgeford, Malloy and Kristin Burhenne each recorded an RBI in the inning.

Samantha Robertson fell to 0-6 for the Indians, giving up three runs on five hits in four innings of work.
