Bruins earn split at Ottawa

OTTAWA, Kan. -- The Bellevue University softball team rebounded from a 10-2 loss in the opening game at Ottawa University, scoring a 6-1 win over Braves in the nightcap, to salvage a doubleheader split Thursday afternoon at Alumni Park.

Bellevue moved to 24-14 on the season after the split. Ottawa is 19-16 overall.

The Bruins will host Hastings College on Tuesday, April 10 in a 4 p.m. doubleheader at Hall of Fame Fields.

Game 1: Ottawa 10, Bellevue 2
The Braves batted through the lineup, scoring five first-inning runs while cruising to the 10-2 win in six innings in the opener. Ottawa pounded out 14 hits in the game.

Bellevue scored on solo homers by Katie Malloy and Kathryn Wardian.

Taylor Mohler suffered the loss, falling to 11-5 on the season, striking out five and walking three while giving up five extra-base hits in 5.1 innings of work.

Game 2: Bellevue 6, Ottawa 1
Malloy and Amanda Neumann both hit two-run homers and Neumann struck out six, allowing just three hits as Bellevue took the nightcap, 6-1.

Malloy finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs, two runs scored, a double, and a home run. Neumann improved to 9-5 on the season with the victory in the circle. 

The game was scoreless until Malloy blasted a two-run homer to center field in the top of the fourth inning. The Bruins made it 4-0 in the sixth with a sacrifice fly to right field by Wardian and an RBI double to left center by Katie Tew.

The Braves cut the lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI double by Deidra Jones.

Neumann added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh with a two-run homer over the left field fence. She retired the side in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win.
