BU softball sweeps Grand View, 6-5, 5-0

DES MOINES, iowa -- The Bellevue University softball team improved to 17-10 on the season with a sweep at Grand View University, winning 6-5 and 5-0, in non-conference action Saturday at Luhrs Athletic Complex.

The Bruins, who have won six-straight games, will head to Fremont, Neb. on Wednesday, March 28, for a 4:30 p.m. doubleheader at Midland University.

Grand View fell to 10-17 overall with the two losses. 

Game 1: Bellevue 6, Grand View 5
The Bruins raced out to a 6-0 lead, scoring three runs in the first and third innings, and then held on for a 6-5 victory in the opener.

A three-run homer by Katie Malloy gave BU an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first. The Bruins extended the lead to 6-0 following a three-run bomb by Kathryn Wardian in the top of the third. 

The Vikings battled back with three runs in the bottom half of the third, highlighted by an RBI double by Emily Gilbert and a two-run double by Anna Arnold.

Grand View pulled to within one run at 6-5 with a two-run homer by Ryan Jehle in the bottom of the sixth frame. 

Taylor Mohler entered the game in the bottom of the seventh, recording two strike outs and a fly out to earn the save.

Game 2: Bellevue 5, Grand View 0
Mohler tossed a two-hit complete-game shutout in the nightcap and Malloy blasted two homers and drove in four runs as BU completed the sweep with the 5-0 victory.

Mohler improved to 7-3 on the season, fanning nine batters with one walk in seven innings of work. 

The Bruins took a 1-0 lead in the second on an RBI single by Shelby Kindelin. BU extended the lead to 4-0 with Malloy's three-run homer in the third inning. Malloy put the exclamation point on the day with a solo homer in the fifth to make the final score, 5-0. 

On the day, Malloy went 4-for-7 with seven RBIs and three home runs.
