William Penn sweeps Bruins, 3-1, 6-1

OSKALOOSA, Iowa -- William Penn University snapped the Bruins' six-game winning streak Wednesday, sweeping Bellevue University 3-1 and 6-1 in a non-conference softball doubleheader at Penn Softball Field.

Bellevue moved to 11-10 on the season with the two losses. The Statesmen improved to 12-8 overall.

The Bruins will host Benedictine College in their home opener on Sunday, March 18. The doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m. at Hall of Fame Fields.

William Penn scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull out the 3-1 win in the opener. 

Neither team scored until Khyia Lewis' solo homer in the bottom of the fourth inning gave WPU a 1-0 lead. 

An RBI single by Brooke Ellis tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the sixth inning.

The Statesmen answered in the bottom of the sixth, scoring on a suicide squeeze by Ashley Stream and an RBI single by Cassie Lohman to make the final, 3-1. 

Amanda Neumann (5-3) took the loss, allowing six hits and one walk while striking out four batters.

After the Bruins took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning on an RBI single by Ellis, the Statesmen responded with six unanswered runs by scoring in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings. 

Lewis drove in two runs for WPU and Jennifer Whitehead allowed just three hits and struck out three Bruins to propel the Statesmen to the sweep.
