Bruins open MCAC play with sweep over Peru

BELLEVUE, Neb. -- The Bellevue University softball team opened conference play with a doubleheader sweep over Peru State College, winning by identical 10-5 scores Tuesday evening at Hall of Fame Fields.
Bellevue produced six home runs on the day, three from Amanda Neuman, and 26 total hits in the two wins. Neumann also picked up both victories on the mound.

The Bruins (15-12, 2-0 MCAC) will host York College on Friday (April 8) in a 4 p.m. conference doubleheader at Hall of Fame Fields. Peru State dropped to 17-17 overall and 0-2 in league play.

Bellevue scored eight runs in the first two innings en route to  the 10-5 victory in the opener.

Neumann (10-5) picked up her 10th win of the season with a complete game, allowing five runs, four earned, on 13 hits with 11 strikeouts. Lyndsay Drumm (3-4) suffered the loss, allowing nine runs in 3.1 innings pitched.

The Bruins recorded four straight singles and a grand slam by Kathryn Wardian capped a five-run first inning to give Bellevue an early 5-0 lead.

A three-run home run by Neumann gave the Bruins a commanding 8-0 lead after two innings.

The Bobcats got on the scoreboard in the third inning with a RBI double by Ashley Wohlers that scored Tesla Oldfield who reached on a fielding error by Bruin second baseman Kim Wees.

The Bruins responded with a run in the bottom half of the third inning with a single to center field by Jessica Guyle that allowed Bartley  to score.

A two-run double by Krista Patton in the top of fifth inning cut the Bruin lead down to 9-3.

Neumann blasted her second home run of the game to lead off the sixth inning to give the Bruins a 10-3 advantage.

PSC concluded the scoring with two runs in the top of the seventh inning to give BU the 10-5 win in the opening game.

Three two-run homers sparked the Bruins to the 10-5 win in the nightcap. Neumann picked up her 11th win of the season and blasted her third home run of the day in the victory. Katie Malloy finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Melissa Ackley, Wees, and Neumann all picked up two RBIs for the BU offense which produced 14 total hits. Brooke Ellis

A solo home run by Ashley Wohlers gave Peru the early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Bobcats increased the margin to 3-0 with a two-run homer to left field by Kristen Bodyk in the top of the fourth inning.

The Bruins gained the lead in the bottom of the fourth, scoring six runs, sparked by a two-run single by Wees, an RBI single by Malloy, and a two-run homer by Neumann to give BU a 6-3 advantage.

An RBI single to left field by Bodyk in the top of the fifth cut the deficit to 6-4. A ground out RBI by Krista Patton made it 6-5 in the top of the sixth.

Two-run homers by Malloy and Ackley pushed the lead to 10-5 in the bottom of the sixth inning. Neumann retired the side in the top of the seventh to secure the 10-5 win.
