Bruins sweep Vikings, 4-3, 8-7

BELLEVUE, NEB. -- The Bellevue University (10-11) softball team swept Grand View University (2-15) 4-3 and 8-7 in eight innings Thursday night at Hall of Fame Fields.

The Bruins will return to action on Sunday, March 27 when they travel to Atchinson, Kan. to battle Benedictine College in a doubleheader at 1:00 p.m.

The Bruins scored two runs in the bottom of seventh on an error by the Grand View first baseman to escape with a 4-3 win in the opening game of the doubleheader.

Amanda Neumann (6-5), this week's MCAC Player of the Week, picked up her sixth win of the season with a complete game, allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits with six strikeouts. Dacia Miller suffered the loss for GVU, falling to 0-6 on the season.

After two walks to begin the top of the third inning, the Vikings scored the first runs of the game with a two-run single to left center field by Emily Gilbert.

GVU added to its lead in the fourth inning with a RBI single to center field by McKenzie Cason that scored Anna Arnold who reached on an error and stole second base to give the Vikings a three-run lead.

BU responded with a run in the bottom of the fifth with a RBI single to center field by Allie Bartley that allowed Kat Wardian to score who opened the inning with a double to left field.

The Bruins cut their deficit down to one, 3-2, with a one-out RBI double in the sixth inning by Kim Wees that scored Jessica Guyle.

A catching error by Vikings' first baseman Megan Tompkins allowed Kelsey Morrissey and Erica McCoy to score the game-winning runs as the Bruins came away with the 4-3 win.

Bellevue 8, Grand View 7 (eight innings)

Neumann's RBI single in the bottom of the eighth propelled the Bruins to an 8-7 win and doubleheader sweep of GVU in the nightcap.

Guyle opened the first inning with a walk and stole second base and came around to score on a RBI double to right field by Wees. The Bruins added to their lead with a two-run home run to right center by Wardian to give the Bruins' an early three-run lead after the opening inning.

A two-run home run by Gilbert in the top of the third inning cut BU's lead down to 3-2.

The Bruins added three runs on four hits to take a four-run lead after five innings. Neumann opened the scoring with a single through the right side to allow Kelly Wieczorek to score and back-to-back RBI doubles by Brooke Ellis and Wardian gave the Bruins a 6-2 advantage.

The Vikings added two runs in the sixth with RBIs by Miler and Arnold and Gilbert hit her second home run of the game in the seventh inning, a three-run homer, to give GVU a one-run lead, 7-6.

A RBI single by Wardian allowed Neumann to score to tie the game at 7-7 and send the game into extra innings before Neumann's walk-off game-winning single scoring Wees who walked earlier in the inning.

Bartley earned the win, pitching four innings and allowed two runs on four hits. Meagan Belieu took the loss and fell to 1-4 this season.
