Bellevue splits doubleheader at Concordia

SEWARD, Neb. -- The Bellevue University (5-10) softball team split a doubleheader with Concordia (Neb.) University (7-5) Wednesday night at Plum Creek Sports Complex. The Bruins lost 5-1 in the first game, before winning the nightcap, 7-5.

BU will return to action on Saturday, March 19 with a non-conference doubleheader against William Penn University. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Hall of Fame Fields.

Game 1
Concordia 5, Bellevue 1

Concordia scored five runs in the fourth and fifth innings to pull out a 5-1 victory against Bellevue in the first game of the doubleheader.

The Bruins were held without a hit until the fifth inning and recorded just two hits in the loss. 

After three scoreless innings, CU scored two runs on three hits and one error in the bottom of fourth inning with RBI singles by Nicole Mapes and Amanda Beeson.

The Bruins answered with a two-out double by Augusta Ratliff to score Amanda Neumann,  who singled earlier in the fifth inning.

Nicole Baker sparked a three-run fifth inning with a two-run home run to right center that scored Amanda Baldwin who walked to begin the inning. Eloge added a RBI single that scored Natalie Svoboda to give the Bulldogs a 5-1 lead after five innings.

Nicole Sempek picked up the complete game win, improving to 4-1 on the season, allowing just two hits and one run with three strikeouts and two walks. Kelly Wieczorek suffered the loss for BU, falling to 0-3 on the year.

Game 2
Bellevue 7, Concordia 5

A three-run seventh inning propelled the Bruins to a 7-5 come-from-behind victory in the nightcap.

The Bruins opened the scoring in the top of the first inning on a RBI double to right field by Brooke Ellis that scored Kelsey Morrissey who walked to lead-off the game and stole second and third base.

CU answered back with an Amber Topil RBI single to score Mikaela Klein who tripled to right center to tie the game at 1-1 after two innings.

The Bulldogs took the lead with two runs in the third inning. Baker opened the scoring with a single that allowed Eloge to score before Amanda Beeson added a RBI double to give CU a 3-1 edge.

Baker tallied her second RBI in the game in the fourth, with a single down the left field line to score pinch-runner Kelsey Timmerman and Svoboda added a RBI groundout to score Baldwin who doubled to give the Bulldogs a four-run lead, 5-1. 

A three-run fifth inning cut BU's deficit down to 5-4. A RBI single by Morrissey single allowed Erica McCoy to cross home plate and Ellis added a two-run double by to score Morrissey and Kim Wees.

The Bruins scored three runs in the final inning to complete the comeback. Wees opened the inning with a walk and eventually came around to score on a wild pitch to tie the game. Melissa Ackley's only hit in the game proved to be the difference, hitting a two-run single to left center that scored Ellis and Neumann to give the Bruins the 7-5 win.

Neumann (3-5) earned the win in relief, pitching 1.2 innings without allowing a hit or walk. Sempek (4-2) suffered the loss and allowed three runs in 2.1 innings after pitching a complete game in the first game.
