DES MOINES, Iowa -- Top-ranked Grand View University edged the Bellevue University men's soccer team 4-3 in the NAIA Men's Soccer National Championship Opening Round Saturday night at the James W. Cownie Soccer Complex.
Grand View (19-2-0) advances to the 16-team NAIA Men's Soccer National Championship final site in Montgomery, Ala. on Dec. 2-7 at the Emory Folmar YMCA Soccer Complex.
Bellevue ends its season with an overall record of 9-9-0.
The Vikings struck first on Ryan McGoawn's goal in the 13th minute.
BU quickly answered back on Manuel Lira's goal off a pass by Leigh Veidman that got past GVU goalkeeper Erik Hundevad at 16:59 to even the match at 1-1.
GVU regained the lead on an unassisted goal by Aaron Scott in the 26th minute of action.
Veidman netted his eighth goal of the season at 41:24 to tie the contest at 2-2 at halftime.
The Bruins found the back of the net at the 54:39 mark in the second half on Lira's second goal of the contest to take a 3-2 lead before GVU scored goals in the 84th and 87th minutes of action to post the 4-3 win.
Vikings' goalkeeper Hundevad earned the win and collected six saves while Ben Martin recorded four saves in the loss for BU.
The Bruins outshot GVU by a 13-12 margin and were led by Veidman's three shots on goal.
