BU claims title at Nebraska Intercollegiate Classic

NORFOLK, Neb. -- Alex Zillig and Floris-Jan Oosterhof both finished in the top three of the individual leaderboard to lead the Bellevue University men's golf team to the team championship at the 2018 Nebraska Intercollegiate Championship.

The Course:

The 2018 Nebraska Intercollegiate Championship was played at the 6,839-yard, par 72 Norfolk Country Club.

Team Recap:

Bellevue finished with a team total of 10-over 298 to go with Friday's 299 for a 36-hole total of 597. The Bruins finished four strokes ahead of second place Nebraska Wesleyan University (300-301--601). Midland was the only other team besides BU to finish under 300 Saturday as the Warriors placed third with a 604 (305-299) team total. 

BU had five individuals place in the top 10, while Nebraska Wesleyan had three and Midland placed two in the top 10. 

Individual Recap:

Midland's Joe Vest won the tournament with a 1-over par total of 145 (72-73). Zillig was two strokes back at 3-over par (74-73). Oosterhof tied for third at 4-over par. 

Andre Becerra tied Zillig for the Bruins' top round of the day with a 73. He finished in a tie for seventh in the 84-player field at 6-over par (77-73). 

Rodrigo Navarette carded a 5-over 77 on Saturday and finished the tournament at 10-over par, which put him in a tie for 10th place.

Bellevue will compete in the Kohler Collegiate Classic at the Whistling Straits Golf Course in Kohler, Wis. on Oct. 22-23. 

Notes:

  • In the first regular-season NAIA Coaches' Top 25 Poll, which came out Tuesday afternoon, BU was ranked No. 14 after beginning the season receiving votes.
  • BU won its second Nebraska Intercollegiate Championship after claiming the title in 2016.
  • The Bruins have finished runner-up in three prior editions of the Nebraska Intercollegiate Championship (2014, 2015, 2017).
