No. 14 Bruins edge ninth-ranked Davenport, 82-76

CHICAGO -- The 14th-ranked Bellevue University men's basketball team posted an 82-76 nonconference win over No. 9 Davenport University Saturday night at Bob Hallberg Court at the Shannon Center in the Saint Xavier (Ill.) Midwest Tournament.

Bellevue won its fifth-straight game and improved to 9-2 while Davenport fell to 10-3 on the season.

Isaiah Strong led the Bruins with 15 points off the bench and added two rebounds, two assists and a steal.

Lee Ames, Thomas Hammock and Taylor Young each scored 12 points. Young posted a team-high eight rebounds and three assists while Ames made four 3-pointers.

Russell Droll chipped in 11 points, six rebounds and a block.

Trailing 11-7 early in the first half, the Panthers went on a 14-2 run to take a 21-13 advantage. The Bruins answered back with a 12-4 spurt to tie the game at 25-all.

The two teams exchanged points the remainder of the period as neither team led by more than four points. BU shot 48.1 percent from the field as they took a 41-38 lead at intermission.

DU opened the second half on a 9-2 run and scored the first five points to take a 47-43 lead before a 13-5 BU run gave the Bruins a 56-52 advantage with 12:01 remaining in the half.

Following a Panthers' layup trimmed BU's lead down to two, 56-54, the remaining of the stanza would remain close as neither team led by more than four points.

Leading 78-76 in the final minute, the Bruins made all four of their free throws to post the 82-76 win.

The Bruins made 31 of their 39 free throw attempts (79.5 percent) with nine 3-pointers. BU also forced 19 turnovers that led to 20 points.

Dominez Burnett led the Panthers with a game-high 25 points and six rebounds, four assists and two steals.

The Bruins will continue tournament action tomorrow (Dec. 22) with an 8:00 p.m. game against Aquinas College.
